| Barked: Mon Mar 19, '07 8:54am PST | | | | | | Maya, what about going to a higher quality food if you can find one? Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Canidae and California naturals are great foods that are lower priced than a lot of the really expensive holistic brands. Other dogs might give you some other suggestions as well. In another thread, Dublin's secret posted a comparison of Beneful (low quality food) vs. Canidae, and found that it would be cheaper to feed his dog Canidae, even though the food cost more per pound http://www.dogster.com/forums/Food_and_Nutrition/thread/391428/last. | | | | |

Lucy - Rest in- Peace, LuLu
Ban the deed,- not the breed! |
| Barked: Mon Mar 19, '07 9:41am PST | | | | | | Here is a list of high quality foods NOT on the recall...and which are foods I would (and do) trust to feed my dogs and cat (applies to both dry and canned food):
Wysong
Castor & Pollux Organix or Natural Ultramix
Natural Balance
Wellness
Solid Gold
Innova
by Nature
Blue Buffalo
Please keep in mind that dogs and cats need 7-14 days of gradual transition to a new commercial food (especially true of kibble, not so much for canned), and if you are changing abruptly due to the food recall scare, you might see some signs of stomach upset, diarrhea or constipation. Also, some dogs and cats may be sensitive to protein rich diets or the probiotics contained in some of the ultra-premium formulations, and this can sometimes cause signs of stomach upset and/or diarrhea. If your pet shows signs of upset, diarrhea or vomiting after changing to a new food, put them on a diet of white rice and boiled chicken (or lean hamburger) for 2-3 days then begin gradually introducing a different new food. Every dog and cat is different and it may take 2 or 3 different food brands before hitting on the brand/formula that is just right for your pet. If constipation occurs (which can happen when switching from a high grain food such as Nutro, to a high protein food such as Innova), give your pet a tablespoon or two of plain canned pumpkin 2-3 times a day. It may take 24-48 hours for the pumpkin to work (read: induce a bowel movement). Most dogs and cats love the pumpkin and it is a safe and natural therapy for constipation!

"Our sweet- Angel' RIP- 3/2/07
Adopt an older- dog, We make- great pets |
| Barked: Mon Mar 19, '07 9:56am PST | | | | | | we called our vet, they put Angel's name on the list. She was so much better she ate the can of pet pride sliced beef and gravy then she got so thirsty i could not get her to quit drinking water. the vet thinks she had something else going on but we will never know now. He said the food could have been the last straw. We were so happy after 5 days of nursing her back to walking and eating, then about 4 hours after eating the food she acted almost like she was poisoned, her little lungs started filling up with fluid , that is when we took her to be put to sleep. I had spent hundreds of dollars to try to save her that week and to think a dollar can of food after she was feeling so much better could have done her in. I am mad. I wrote a letter in about it to the web address you put up, Thank you | | | | |

Beg. It brings- treats. |
| Barked: Mon Mar 19, '07 9:59am PST | | | | | | Helix, I would love to be able to buy those brands, but, unfortunately, in Oklahoma City I can not find them. The "best" you can find around here is Science Diet, Eukanuba, Iams, Diamond and Nutro (Natural Choice). I do use the BilJac frozen as training treats ( I find it having less sugars and other stuff than the regular treats) and also I make them home-baked crackers. Had to change some recipes of home-made because of Whisper's intolerance for chicken organs, honestly, after the bad experience with chicken gizzards I didn't even dare to try the beef hearts and liver I had in their food. I gave them to one of my neighbors who has a border collie that just had puppies.
Well, I had the same concerns about abruptly changing their kibble, so I went ahead and got their regular brand of Natural Choice kibble (Lamb and rice for healthy skin), the bag says "manufactured by Nutro" somewhere in California, so hopefully it will be ok. Panic level is pretty high among pet owners by what I saw, lots of people were reluctant to buy the regular canned/pouched food even if it didn't have gravy and there was a whole spontaneous meeting going on at the local pet store (I have one a few blocks from my house) with lots and lots of home-make cooking recipes being exchanged BOL. A lady said that she already has made a big pot of home-made gravy and had portioned it in zip-lock bags in the freezer to add it to regular canned food. Not a bad idea.

| Barked: Mon Mar 19, '07 10:11am PST | | | | | | Great to post the list again. Just to mention that for now, only canned and "pouched" food that is "cuts and gravy" style has been recalled, all of it being processed in the Menu Foods factory in Kansas. No regular canned or "pouched" food or kibbles is on the recall. | | | | |

I didn't do it! |
| Barked: Mon Mar 19, '07 10:40am PST | | | | | | Thanks for all the great help given here on Dogster! Penny did not eat any Natural Choice pouched wet food thank goodness. I'm taking them back to Petco this week with the printed FDA list. And I am SO sorry for anyone that lost their babies over this. My heart goes out to you! | | | | |

| Barked: Mon Mar 19, '07 11:36am PST | | | | | | Hi Maya: I found a couple of places in Oklahoma City that sell Canidae (I used the store locator on their website). Can you get to any of these? We live in a super small city (~200 000 people) in Canada, and we can only get a few of the holistic brands. I imagine these stores would also carry lots of other good ones! Sorry for hijacking the post!
