I went to my local pet store and we were talking about dog nutrition. He told me about Orijen dpg food. He said that was the kibble form of raw feeding. He also saif that it was a protein based diet. No grain are included and the meets are vet inspected and human grade. This food is made in Alberta he told me. So its local for me.
Does anybody have ever heard about this brand? If yes what do you think of it?
That's what came in my mind when I firt heard about it. The price is fairly low if its about the same than Inova Evo. I think I'll switch over that one once I ahve done some more research on it.
Hey Taco, Orijen is awesome!!! It is comparable to Innova Evo, but even better. It is made right here in Alberta -- right outside Edmonton in fact. They source all their ingredients from here within Canada and include some local botanicals that are good for the digestive system and overall health. The ingredients are human grade and they don't use any genetically modified anything, which is great. They don't extrude their kibble at as high temps as most, so they retain more good stuff.
It's definitely not the "kibble form of raw", as no kibble can compare to food in its raw form. Seems like every commercial kibble company is trying to retain business from the folks leaning towards a raw diet, and I guess they can hardly be blamed.
They have a good website that explains a lot about who they are and where they're coming from. Find it at: http://www.championpetfoods.com/, at least I think that's the link. It seems to be down right now but I'll check it tomorrow and update if necessary.
I'd DEFINITELY use Orijen as a part of a good rotation diet. The biggest problem with the food now is that they only offer one formula -- chicken, eggs, and fish. I hope they come out with a red meat version or something like EVO did so people can stick to the brand but get the variety in there!
I'd LOVE to try Orijen. But unfortunately, only Petland sells it and I do not support Petland due to the fact that they sell puppies and kittens. I hope other pet supplie stores like Pet Valu will carry it! The ingredients seem great.
This is supposed to be a great food. Our local health pet food store sells it and the owner has nothing but good things to say about it. I think that it is great that it is Alberta made. I have considered trying it, but I am so happy with the Timberwolf that Maggie is eating that I am not sure I want to switch. It is tempting to buy a bag to try - it sounds so good.
I have made the jump! I am not slowly introducing the new food over Taco, Molly and my foster Harley. I have started with a sample size bag to test what they were going to do if I give them as treat. I was pleased to see that Taco took them as treats! He is a fine mouth usualy and he don't eat what is not attractive to eat. Usualy when I switch him over a new food its runs all over de house for a couple of days! Nothing since 48 hours!!! I bet that was the grains that was doing it!
I went over a couple of independant pet stores to see what they had to say about Orijen. Nothing but good thing. One even told me that she haven't got any bags back which is unusual she said. Only good comments about it. All told me that was comparable to Inova Evo too.
So far I'm pleased with that brand. I'm expecting that Molly will finish loosing the few pounds she still have on her to loose.
Like another poster said I would like them to have another ingredient than chicken as based since my other foster dog Buddy is alergic to chicken and I bet he'll do way better on that than is actual brand (First Mate Senior-> potato and fish). He don't have any trouble about the ear infection anymore but he need to loose a few more pounds. I think bison or other wild meat can be a good bet.
