Kaiser - Its all about money?? Maybe that's the way you think, but I refuse to believe everyone is like that. Do you really know for a fact that the vets are paid to promote it??? Everyone says this but how do you all know this, I would be interested to see some legitate proof on this.

No Vet Tech does not mean Vet but I would think that they would have more knowledge than the average person.

And is the kthanxbye REALLY necessary, no need to be rude.

Thank you Kaiser! I was going to post that myself but you beat me to it. Great minds think alike buddy! Science Diet Puppy Lamb Meal and Rice formula does not contain by products. But as Kaiser listed A LOT of them do. Before posting on this board people should really do thorough research and make sure they do not post false statements because I think people that truly are interested in getting food advice need to be told the truth. To make a statement that Science Diet does not contain by products is totally false.

Kaiser- As the person in the animal clinic I work at that deals with the Hill's company, I will have you know that prices of Science Diet are not jacked up but more than 10% at the average vet clinic. This mainly is because the vet clinics have to pay Science Diet to deliver the food. Most of that 10% goes twoards paying for the delivery of food. Also, no. Vet clinics do not get paid to "promote" Science Diet. They provide the food as a convience and service to it's clients.

Also, targeting your "Vet techs aren't vets" comment, you are right, but are being extremely rude. I, being a vet tech, will have you know that I take food classes and attend seminars every single month to sharpen up on my nutrition knowledge. I know more than the average person, but am not shoving it in everybody's face to use the food that I use, because the food I use is not going to effect everybody's dog the same way. I personally feel that Science Diet is the best food for my dog and could care less what everybody else feeds their dog.

Please, help to keep the forums more civil. Comments such as your above only add fuel to the fire on already not-so-nice threads.

Actually I do read my food labels very carefully. There is hardly anything packaged that I can eat! BOL! I also read all the labels on everything I buy Chaz. I was not saying that Science diet is so terrible. Like I said before it's definitely not the worst but it's not the best either. But some of the formulas do contain "by products" and that should be noted. That's all.

Hey guys, I've got an idea. Let's just be happy that we're not fighting about how wonderful Ol' Roy is, okay?! Atleast we're feeding our dogs some form of quality food, no matter what it is!

It is important to remember that everyone here on dogster loves their dogs very much and does what they think is best for their dog. As long as your dog is not starving, I am happy!

I think it's good to talk about dog food ingredients, and I think we should all educate ourselves on what is in our dog food. This could be a very informative thread if we can stick to talking about ingredients and leave the personal attacks at home. There is no call for insulting people because of the food they feed or the beliefs they hold.

Remember, "Snarling, snapping, biting and other rough behavior is strictly forbidden". Now lets get back to talking about ingredients and forget about the other stuff!

A lot of healthy dogs eat purina too and other grocery store brands. I completely agree with the statement of feed your dog what you feel is best. I could care less if you feed your dog Science Diet, I just won't feed my dogs it.

Purina has been on the market for ages and lots of people will say it's horrible food.. yet.. they are still selling. Why? Cheap prices and marketing.

and I didn't say EVERY vet.. I said A LOT of vets. There is a whole lot of vets in the world. In an earlier post I said I was amazed at how little so many vets know about nutrition. This is a statement I have made from personal experience and experiences of others that I have heard. When I said this I got a are you a vet comment. No, I'm not.. but I try to do the best by my dogs and that includes doing a lot of research. Lots of times I have spent so much money at a vet's office only to keep having the same problems. I do my own research and find out for myself what's wrong with my dogs and fix the problem myself. Vets hate that because you're costing them money in services. Again, this has been my experience. I know a lot of people do the same thing.

I priced Science Diet at petsmart and it was around $40some.. I priced it at a vet's office and it was $60+.. that's a tad more than a 10% markup.

Science Diet contains by-products and Ginger said it didn't.. sorry, I pointed out that her information was false.. but it was. And what the heck is chicken "flavour".. if I want to feed my dogs chicken, they will get chicken.. not chicken "flavour".

Reading this thread.. Chaz's Mom was only trying to be helpful to everyone by sharing the information she has researched and gathered.. you can either chose to use it or not.. your call... I found you guys were rude to her... so pot meet kettle.

I personally have never seen any Science Food over $40, and that includes Zeus' 40# bag of food.

Again, I wouldn't touch any food with a 10 food pole but what I feed Zeus. It works for us. Chunky man has proudly lost 4 pounds on the food he's on and I'm thrilled.

From a personal stand point, I believe that why nutrition is important, vets have much more to worry about, like for instance, keeping up with the latst technology and new methods of surgery, new emergency sitiuation protocols and ways to better the health of your pet in ways that we as regular-ol'-pet owners can't.

For instance, did you know that when the bird flu hits (if it even does) that there's supposed to be such a mass outbreak that they are considering using vet clinics and putting beds in them just so there can be enough IV drips for everybody. That, for instance, is what these vets have to worry about. Their businesses going under and trying to figure out how to treat pets if this happens.
