Good dog food doesn't have lots of grain.. corn and wheat aren't good for dogs anyway. The first three ingredients are what tells quality. They should be meat or meat meal, not meat and bone meal or meat by products. If two of the three ingredients are the same source... like corn and corn gluten meal.. then even if the first ingredient is meat.. there is more corn than meat. So mom buys food without any wheat or corn in it. I'm allergic to rice too so no lamb and rice for me.

most vets carry science diet because Hill's makes prescription food for pets and sick dogs might need prescription food.

Got to agree with Snowy.

Feed a hungry dog and you have a friend for life, whatever you feed, feed. Too many of our homeless and stray pals go hungry everyday, be thankful that you can feed whatever you want.

touchy topic here and there... but everyone's just gotta be respectful of opinion...

my opinion on the matter is that there are lots of foods out there that will be more than fine in terms of a dog's survival.

but the "higher-quality" foods will help a dog thrive even more.

those on the products considered "low-quality" should give the "higher-quality" products a try just to see if you can notice positive differences in your dog. don't need to go out and buy a whole bag of it... grab a couple sample bags from a local pet specialty store for small dogs... or buy a small bag of it for larger dogs... (just enough for any differences to show... maybe 2-3 weeks worth of food?...most quality pet stores will refund opened bags of food if the owner is not satisfied)

my cousin recently switched from beneful to canidae and i've already noticed more lean muscle mass and a healthier coat. she could have went from beneful to science diet and saw improvements, but the point is she's looking around for improvements.

i have confidence from my research that most of the cases will see improvements... but of course there ARE exceptions.

i feel that brands like science diet, purina, ol'roy, etc. are sufficient to keep your dog alive and possibly for a long time... but I believe that it is the responsibility of the owner to search for a better product...even when they are using brands that are considered "high-end"...

if after trying out different quality products, you don't find any differences or if you find negative differences, then go back to what you had originally. there are many "high-quality" brands that still need improvement as well.

it doesn't hurt to look for a better product. it shows good ownership.

have a nice day everyone... summer's just right around the corner! =D
