We have been feeding Joey and Frankie Science diet and recently the lady at our local pet store told us she isn't selling it anylonger because it has bad ingrediants in it. Has anyone heard of this being true? I have never had any problems with our dogs. Not sure if the lady is just selling a new product or is she is telling the truth. Our vet said there is nothing wrong with Science Diet.

We feed Zeus Science Diet and love it. I have never heard anything ever about Science Diet not having quality ingredients in it. From my understanding, it's the other way arround. My mom feeds her Shih Tzu Prescription Diet (The "prescription" form of Science Diet) for her allergies, and swears by it!

Actually, Science diet does have some less than quality ingredients but I must say it is definitely better than a lot of dog foods out there. My very first dog as a kid was on Science Diet her entire life and she lived to be 14 years old. However, I feel there are better foods out there.

The first ingredient I do not care for is "chicken by product meal"- this is not a nutritious ingredient since by products are the animal part scraps that are not fit for human consumption. Fortunately though it is not listed as the first ingredient. It is a positive thing that "chicken" is the first ingredient. Brewers rice is not the healthiest ingredient either because it is a processed rice product rather than whole rice. Another positive is that they do not use chemical preservatives and I do not see menadione (vitamin K3) listed in the dry original adult formula. "Animal Fat" is listed and that is too vague of a description-- what animal did the fat come from? Soybean meal does not hold much nutritional value because all the oil is dried out in the processing.

Honestly though, after carefully reading the ingredients, Science diet is definitely better than quite a few of the big name popular dog foods that you would find at the grocery store.

Well you will get a lot of negative responses on here about Science diet. Do I quite believe all of it, No. Bailey used to be on Science Diet and was fine, I decided to try something else but if I wasn't happy with how she did I would switch back.

Vets recommend it all the time, many people here say that they get paid to advertise it, but I am sorry no one can convince me that a vet would endorse a product that they thought was bad.

No matter what do your own research before you do anything, if you are happy with the product and your pups are fine on it then don't let someone pressure you to change.

My vet sells it too. Kaiser was on it for a long time because I didn't know any better. Science Diet is horribly overpriced for it's worth. The only thing I seen it do for Kaiser was make him chubby. He gave new meaning to the term "corn fed". BOL!

It never ceases to amaze me about how so many vets know nothing about nutrition.

I don't think anyone is pressuring anyone here to change. People ask for advice and for information and it is provided to them. Then of course, it is up to the person to make the best decision based on the information they receive and research it for themselves and then decide what is best for their dog.

I agree that research is the most important tool in making a decision on what food to feed your dog.

Thanks everyone. Truthfully, I just think the pet story lady was getting paid for selling a new product. She should not be telling people it's bad if it isn't. I never really heard anything bad about science diet. It is expensive!

Oh also I wanted to tell you I also was told that by a pet store lady, just seems wrong to me for them to push one brand over the other.

She shouldn't have said it was "bad" but she could have said we have chosen not to sell it anymore because it contains some "low quality" ingredients.

I don't think it's wrong for a sales lady to push one brand over the other. I think it's nice that some people tell you the truth.
