I know this was posted some time ago, but I've been researching the same and came across this thread. Anyway, I stumbled on Air Animal: http://www.airanimal.com/. Looks pretty similar to Pet Airways. Good to all of you--I'm sure going to need it for my dog!

I realize I'm pretty late to responding to this thread, but I wanted to let you know of a start up that aims to allow pets to travel by air. Check it out!

I'd like to mention an airline currently in development that may be open soon if anyone still has a need for this type of service! Their website is www.peopleandpetsair.com. Good luck!

AS a professional pet shipper and owner of Airborne Animals LLC, I can tell you that injuries and deaths happen on all airlines. Nearly always it is because of a pre-existing medical condition that may be undiagnosed. As a pet shipper, I would not be in this business if I had to worry about every dog, cat or other pet I shipped. Within the USA, United and Delta are the two main airlines that have pet shipping programs. And because they both ship thousands of pets, the few incidences reported are a fraction of 1%....not good if it's your pet, but also not enough to be worried about. Internationally there are a number of good airlines with pet programs, including KLM, Lufthansa, Emirates, Swiss etc.
I use them all.
