 | | | | It really depends on how often your dog has traveled in the car and if your dog likes the car. We've gone long distances to pick up all our dogs, as long as 17 hours away and never had a problem. Two of our dogs were even imported from Germany so they not only had a flight, but a three-hour car ride to deal with. Our GSD Xella absolutely loves to travel. We've taken her on 32+ round trip house-hunting trips when she was less than a year old. Stayed in hotel rooms, hung out at the mall in Texas, she even went with us to see prospective homes. We never had a problem with her.
If you choose to take your dog, just remember to bring the proper provisions (i.e. leash, bowls, water, food, towels, bags to clean up after the dog, etc. and you'll be set. Five hours isn't really that long. Make sure not to feed or water your dog before a trip. With you going to a farm, your dog should have a blast.
Personally we've had trouble when we've left our dogs with someone else so you'd really have to check any facilities and see about references as what people say and what they actually do can be two different things.
