I've been looking for a show dane pup for quite a while, and I've found a couple of kennels in Europe I might consider going thru. Before I make my decision weither or not to import, I thought I'd ask around and see what others have been through importing dogs. Is it a big hassel? Anything go wrong? Would you do it again? Any tips or recomendations?

Never imported from Europe to USA (only other countries), but known breeders who have. Actually, the import requirements to the USA are surprisingly lax when compared to other countries like the UK or Japan.

More or less you just need proof of rabies vaccination (30 days before travel, except puppies under 3 months, or 6 mths in a country "Free of rabies" - which would include the UK and some other island countries.

Export requirements are generally easier than import requirements, even out of Europe.

Best of luck!! way to go

It depends on which European country you are exporting from. In addition to the items that Lilith mentioned, there are additional clearances that must be done for countries (generally Southern Europe) that have leishmaniasis. Screw worm can also be an issue depending on location.

You could ask on breed specific forums? For example, GSD breeders and owners import GSDs ALL THE TIME to the USA wave

Buddy and Sadie, *most* GSD importers are importing from Germany, Belgium and the Czech Republic. Importing from the latter two are very straight forward with no twists, but not all of the European countries are that simple.

Depending on where you are, screw worm can be a concern, although according to USDA-APHIS, there are no country in Europe recognized as being affected.

Additionally, if the area is affected by Foot and Mouth Disease, you want to keep dogs away from livestock before you ship them. And don't ship them with bedding like hay or straw.

Moreover, the US doesn't actually have official quarantine facilities. All they can do is refuse to clear the dog until a veterinarian has checked him. So it's still better to get that all out of the way, otherwise you'll have to jump through a few more hoops and waste more time.

I imported two dogs from Poland. All that was required is that the pups be vaccinated by a vet. Breeders who have exported generally know what all needs to be done so you can talk to the breeder. It is a rather simple process to import from Europe.
