Going through customs with dog food?

For anyone that has travelled internationally, did you bring food or buy food when you got there?

Usually we just buy the food (either Ziwipeak or raw) when we get there, but since this year, the BF is travelling with Luna a few days before I go, I don't trust him to do it right. Right now he's saying "well Pedigree isn't that bad for a few weeks".. I beg to differ.. I don't want to be cleaning up messes over my vacation..

If I pack dog food with him, will he have problems at customs? I know some customs are really really strict about importation of meat or animal products.

What if I just brought vegetable-only stuff, like Honest Kitchen Preference, that I could add meat to when we get there?

Thoughts? Ideas? thinking

I have NO CLUE but I think if it was in a sealed package that stated it was Dog Food and they knew you were traveling with a dog, I can't see why they would have a prolem.

Check to see if Japan has any restrictions on whatever meat is in the food. I know that there have been times when dog food containing beef has been confiscated out of luggage coming into South Korea. Last time I checked with the local evo rep, the ROK government hasn't lifted import bans on US dog food containing beef, thus they cannot import it.

I checked and yes there is an embargo on all things containing beef. But above that, to import *any* meat you need an import permit which is lengthy and on top of the import stuff with the dogs already, not something I want to deal with.

I did ask about Honest Kitchen Preference (vegetables only, we can buy the meat and add it in Japan) and the lady said that vegetable (freeze dried or dehydrated - not live or fresh) was going to be fine. So that's what we're gonna do. Thanks all!
