I'm a professionally licensed pet sitter. For in-home sitting I charge $55 a night (from 6pm to about 10am) plus $5 per additional pet. But, we live in a pricey area. Think about it, you'll need to not only feed them but also walk them and keep them company, and it does make your drive to work longer.

Our kennel costs $21.00 for one dog and $26.00 for two dogs (same run). We have recently looked into home care. The few prices we got were similar but they would only come for 3 visits per day (not over night). They wanted $13.00 to $15.00 per half hour visit. So 3 half hour visits would be $45.00. They claim to bring in the mail, open/close curtains and turn on/off lights. A half an hour would go fast and the dog wouldn't get much attention. I imagine it would be no more then putting the dog out for a few minutes and supplying food and water. This wouldn't work for us so I didn't follow up on it.

I LOVE that there are sitters that are licensed that stay over night! Thats amazing. I couldn't get one around my area. She came 3x's per day and took them on walks for 36 dollars. I NEVER leave my dogs with anyone other than my mother. She stays overnight and the entire day with them when my husband and I are out of town. I only used the sitter when my husband and I were married in Jamaica and the fam tagged along! wave

Hi Jelly. Don't suppose you'll read this, since the post is a bit old, but just in case: I work for a petsitting company, and believe it or not, we do actually spend at least 25 minutes or more with the dog on each visit. The mail, lights and other stuff only takes 5 minutes, and the rest of the time is for the dog. Typically for a vacation sit, we let the dog(s) out or walk them briefly, then feed them if it's breakfast/dinner time, and then take them for a walk. Then we change water, lights, whatever, and write a note. I spend at least 30 minutes with the dog, and usually it's more like 45 to 60 minutes. All dogs I've cared for this way do well with this. They sleep a lot of the time in between visits, and then when the sitter comes, they get 20-30 minutes of concentrated exercise, which is often as much or more than what they get at home with the owner in today's busy world! I know some people think $20 per half hour walk or visit is high, but you're paying for our training and insurance, and making it worthwhile for us to do it, given that we usually have to spend an hour per job when travel time is factored in! It can, however, get pricey if you pay a company to take care of your pets for a two week period - usually more than a kennel.

I used to dog sit my neighbors dog. She gave me a few dollars, but it was only for a short while, so that's ok.
