Baltimore to Seoul via Atlanta. Roughly 24 hours in the crate. No problems. I've also shipped other dogs for shows, pulls, and breeding purposes.

Yes, a 9 hour flight across the country. I would just try NOT to use tranquilizers or sedatives. They'll make it out fine - not sure about the wallet though.. smile

Ooops, I didn't notice when I posted that you are an English Bulldog. Word of warning, snub nose pups tend to have more problems with cargo/checked baggage air travel than non-snub nosed breeds. Definitely no tranqs and you really shouldn't fly if the weather is more than 75 or so (even though the cut off temp for normal travel is 85) since you guys tend to overheat soo easily. A cooling mat would probably be a good idea. You are also going to want a more in-depth health check from your vet prior to travel. The airline incident reports for animal mishaps shows a trend where English Bulldogs tend to have undiagnosed heart defects which when combined with the stress of travel and their propensity to overheat can cause death.

Hey, since on the topic of air travel, anyone familiar with or used Pet Airways?

http://petairways.com/

Sounds like it may be a viable alternative way to travel for within the US, and avoiding cargo...(We have friends who work as "baggage manglers" for a major airline, and have some frightening stories to tell about what happens sometimes to pets...It's not a generalization, but I wouldn't want this to happen to me.)

We have flown poodles and labs with no problems, however, I would not fly a Frenchie under any circumstances... I have too many first hand accounts of heat caused deaths resulting! Incidently, too cold is just as much a problem with the Frenchies.

You are all wonderful, I am a 5 year old Bulldog and in good health but the problem is my nose, and stress levels.
Grandma has read up on the various Airline policies and we see that what you have all said is true - no tranquilizers - and the cooling mat is a good idea.
Southwest is starting to carry in the Cabin only - and that is a straight flight which would be ideal - but we cannot use it being 50 lbs.
The new Pet Airline is a thought, they travel to NY and Chicago - we are in Buffalo, but a good possibility.
Hopefully son will think of driving back, even though a 3 day trip from Nevada, it is a safe travel.

this feedback is great!
i am a 2yr old Aussie and will be making a flight in just a couple weeks.

the airline's rules are that if any city on our itinerary is forcasted over 85, we need a Letter of Acclimation from the vet. if any city on the itinerary is forcasted over 95 they will NOT fly with me (and rightfully so).

our plan is to pray for unseasonably cool weather for mid-July, and put a Cool Bed in the bottom of my crate to keep me comfortable. we also have a direct flight from Denver to Akron - so the estimate is that I'll be in the crate for ~6hrs total. just in case of hot weather we have a back-up dog sitter for me... but mom will be heart-broken if i have to be left behind.

love reading other's experiences of air travel with dogs, big and small, in cargo. how did they do? any tips to make things easier on the pooch?

I'd be leary of any airline that will fly with temps over 85, even with an acclimation certificate. 85 air temp will be closer to 100 on the tarmac.
