Shayne- Disc Doggin in- the 'Burgh! |
| Barked: Tue Oct 27, '09 5:42pm PST | | | | | | During my undergrad years i performed a sanctioned research project that looked at the dog training programs IN prison. I went into a medium security facility, saw the program in action and talked to the inmates.
If this show/program does 1/2 the amazing things the dogs did for the inmates and the inmates for the dogs, i think it would be awesome (the program not necessarily the TV show).
Hopefully this tv show will do programs like this justice...showing the benefits both to human and animal.

Uggi
I used to be a- stray, now I'm a- PIRATE |
| Barked: Wed Oct 28, '09 8:59am PST | | | | | | Hi all. This show is about Villalobos Rescue Center (vrcpitbull.com) in Aqua Dulce, CA. Villalobos is THE largest Pit Bull only rescue ion the nation. Tia has a MINIMUM of 200 dogs out there all the time. Not just rescued fighting dogs either. She has dogs out there that are survivors of Hurricanes Katrina, Gustav and Ike, she gets calls to rescue dogs that are right in L.A. and the local Animal Control will even contact her. She has helped with several HUGE rescues including hoarding situations. Her programs are quite varied, from the current parolee program to her programs for at risk inner city youths and her pit bull training programs. If you adopt a dog from Villalobos you get free lifetime training classes.
This series is chronicling the day to day operations of the rescue and what it really takes to do what she does as well as how the rescuing and training of the dogs affects these parolees. And it is a PROFOUND effect. Some of the most jaded guys will simply melt when it comes to these dogs.
I know I sound like a commercial *lol* truth is that we adopted our dog Uggi from Villalobos and we have filmed an episode of the series (“Redemption” scheduled to air November 6 @ 10 Pm). The parolees are friendly, personable and respectful. We met many of them when we filmed up at the ranch. We even got to have lunch with them. Let’s face it, we’ve all made mistakes, some worse than others. But we all hope for the opportunity to make amends for our mistakes and have that second chance. Well Tia and Villalobos is giving that chance to both dogs and men. Tia is an amazing woman and she is doing amazing things for these dogs and these people. The world would be a better place if we had more like her.

| Barked: Sun Nov 1, '09 7:25pm PST | | | | | | I've only seen the one episode that they've aired thus far so I'm not really ready to form an opionion on it. I didn't think all the use of the s-word was very professional and didn't like that the woman who owns the rescue claims pit bulls were designed for fighting other dogs on her website (when in actuality they were originally used for working and bull baiting, then some lines were used for fighting, then later still show lines came into effect and today those show lines are not used for fighting). I did like that they showed the dog that was reported for acting aggressively, I was actually surprised that once she showed the dog that she wasn't going to hurt him and stepped behind the gate the dog actually acted more fearful than aggressive, and once she put the leash on him he acted like a normal dog; that was really neat to see.
I'm going to keep watching because I'm really curious what kind of turns this show will take. Hopefully there will be plenty of positive response following it towards "bull" breed dogs and other misaligned breeds.

| Barked: Mon Nov 2, '09 2:24pm PST | | | | | | The episode that aired was the premiere episode. the next episode is the episode that we fillmed with Uggi. As for the use of the "s" word, this is a reality show and the reality is that people use those words from time to time. As for the website...I'm not even going to get into it. We've had pit bulls as family pets since the 1970s and I personally have seen and heard all the BS that people do and or say about this breed.
Yes they were used for bull baiting and in the 1800s they were used for fighting. In fact some poorer families would fight their dogs in an effort to make some extra money. It was these same people that would let the injured dog ride home in the carriage with the baby. In 30 years I have personally done the research. Some are more game bred than others, but to try to ignore the fact that this breed was once used for dog fighting is, in my opionion, irresponsible. Almost as irresponsible as a pit bull owner/parent that would take their dog to an off leash dog park.
In my opinion you should always know the history of a breed BEFORE tyou decide to add one to your family.

| Barked: Mon Nov 2, '09 3:01pm PST | | | | | | I actually have to agree with uggi...there really is no getting around the fact that the American PIT bull terrier was originally created for fighting. Thus the word "pit" in its name (this is the sar reason AKC doesn't recognize them as APBT but as Amstaff.) nonetheless, MANY many dogs, even socialized dogs of all breeds can grow up to have dog aggression. But don't take this wrong, I loooove my bully breeds. Their history just cannot be ignored. | | | | |

Off topic, but every pittie that has come to ours got along great with the other dogs. I don't see why taking a properly socialized pit with no history of DA to a dog park is irresponsible.

I see it as irresponsible to take a pit bull to an off leash dog park because, if another dog jumps a pit bull and the pit bull defends itself it is automatically thought to be the pit bull's fault, simply because of breed. I have never taken any of my pit bulls to off leash parks because I have seen this exact thing happen more times than I can count. Every time I see it happen I am the one to call Animal Control and the police. And I have ALWAYS told them that no the pit bull did not attack any dog, just the opposite. It’s not that the pit bulls don’t get along with other dogs, it’s the other dogs that are the concern.
I believe it is unfair to a pit bull to temp fate with their lives.
