 Let's Go!!! |
| Barked: Sat Jun 27, '09 1:43pm PST | | | | | | Hello all! I know there was a post a few months ago about "The Life of Edgar Sawtelle." I think I even commented on it...
Fast forward to today, I went to a craft show in town and found it at a Charity book sale. for $1.00--I have started it, but HAD to go and look at Amazon, (like a big dummy) to read reviews....one of the remarks was "I can't believe I wasted my time on this book, the ending is terrible." And someone else said it was "emotionally painful" to read.
So without giving the ending away, do you guys think it is too depressing to commit to? I have no problem with long books, I am a van driver and have big chunks of down time on some days....
I like books that have characters that stay with you, long after you finish the book, and from what I have read of the "good" reviews, this sounds like one of those books...so, what do you guys think?
Thanks! | | | | |

From the Jacket
A BookBrowse Favorite Book
Born mute, speaking only in sign, Edgar Sawtelle leads an idyllic life with his parents on their farm in remote northern Wisconsin. For generations, the Sawtelles have raised and trained a fictional breed of dog whose thoughtful companionship is epitomized by Almondine, Edgar's lifelong friend and ally. But with the unexpected return of Claude, Edgar's paternal uncle, turmoil consumes the Sawtelles' once peaceful home. When Edgar's father dies suddenly, Claude insinuates himself into the life of the farm—and into Edgar's mother's affections.
Grief-stricken and bewildered, Edgar tries to prove Claude played a role in his father's death, but his plan backfires—spectacularly. Forced to flee into the vast wilderness lying beyond the farm, Edgar comes of age in the wild, fighting for his survival and that of the three yearling dogs who follow him. But his need to face his father's murderer and his devotion to the Sawtelle dogs turn Edgar ever homeward.
David Wroblewski is a master storyteller, and his breathtaking scenes—the elemental north woods, the sweep of seasons, an iconic American barn, a fateful vision rendered in the falling rain—create a riveting family saga, a brilliant exploration of the limits of language, and a compulsively readable modern classic.
---It sounds intriguing to me, and I know a lot of Dogsters have read it already.... It is about 560 pages, so is sort of an epic. I guess it took the author 15 years to write. I was really pleasantly surprised to pick it up so cheap today! | | | | |

I wouldn't worry about the "critics" on Amazon. I've read some reviews for some of the best books I've ever read that were very harsh. You never know until you try it. | | | | |

I did not read the reviews of "Edgar" before I started, so I went into it with an open mind. The book is beautifully written, and anyone who has ever loved a dog can dial in to the relationships between Edgar and the dogs.
I must say, the ending did surprise me. Would I read it again - no. Am I glad I read it - YES. It is by no means too painful to read. | | | | |
