Some dogs wear booties for prevention and protection. Dogs can get splits from hard snow or when the snow balls up between toes, etc. Booties protect them when they do get splits and can help prevent more problems. Mushers will also use wrist wraps for sore wrists the warmth is a real comfort to the dogs.

Mushers in Iditarod will go through 1000s of booties during the race. They also use foot ointments between toes, etc. Foot care is a HUGE responsiblity.

Does anyone use handwarmers to massage dogs after runs? Even in a recreational setting, I'll have them in my gloves and dogs really enjoy it!

Nope- I massage them with Algyval at half-way points though.

It's all voice control. Well, if you can use the term control laugh out loud. The entire team learns to ignore all distractions for passing and general safety and to stop on command (well, sometimes. My team just started stopping about last year, but it only works after they get the initial piss and vinegar out in the first fifteen miles or so). Lead dogs are trained to pass teams, turn right/left, go faster/slow down, and keep the team lined out on breaks.

A big thing to remember that listening is not mandatory. The old mantra is that the lead dog is always smarter than you, so if he refuses a command there is most likely a reason. It seems like whenever I try to go against Baxter, something always happens and I end up getting annoyed that I didn't listen to him in the first place.

I've never been in a situation where I've used Algyval, who are some suppliers that sell it? Though I did try some on my hands when I worked at Jim O's, it warms you up fast, I can imagine the dogs really love it.

I didn't really get to give this episode my undivided attention, my "man" was blabbing the whole time...I mean that as loving as possible, HA! I'm getting a bit annoyed that they're not showing some smaller time mushers when they (I think) have time to do so. Ah well.

This may be my last post for a long while as we're moving back to ol' KY and the internet is dial up, so happy tails and trails to all!

I LOVE this show! I so want to move north and get some dogs and a sled and then just probably look at the stuff since I dont have a clue on what to do! laugh out loud

But anyway, when they are feeding the dogs, first what is it? Sometimes you can see raw things and then other times its a like a lumpy soupy mix. I am so panicky about bloat with my little pugs and mixes, isn't there a worry about that with these dogs? Or is it just editing that makes it look like they are eating and then running?

Seriously, I am so addicted. I ordered two books to read on the subject and I considered volunteering for the next one! I do have a vet tech background and dog care experience, so you never know. Or if any of you mushers need some live in help, well I am more than willing to uproot and come to you!laugh out loud

I keep telling my puggle Bo that he needs to get ready, he is my lead dog ( as he sleeps in a little ball on his warm blankie on the couch)laugh out loud

The food depends on the musher. I feed kibble mixed with a little bit of meat and other supplements, but some people feed things like tripe, rice, fish, etc.

We would love to have you volunteer! There is always help needed somewhere wink

I am so there! laugh out loud It is snowing here and I started looking at sleds online. My mother wants to know who of our dogs is going to pull me. laugh out loud One is a totally blind pug, one is a partially blind pug that went through hip surgery and has arthritis in the other hip and her back, one is a puggle that has a sorta bad shoulder and Bo, the one I really thought would be my weight pulling dog just lays down when he wears his harness.

I think my dream is fizzing out.frown
