Fun On The- Run Kennel- Racing
09 Junior- Iditarod 8th! |
| Barked: Thu Oct 23, '08 10:55am PST | | | | | | Mushers sit because they are getting old...like Jeff King Sorry, couldn't resist...
Really, they sit because if they didn't they would be in a lot of pain and probably wouldn't be able to stand much after the race...I know I am building a sit-down sled next summer, so that I can ski-pole along with the dogs, and evenly distribute my weight over the length of the sled runners(at least, that is the idea). And most mushers do stand up for the whole race(Lance Mackey is one of them). I don't know too many people who could afford to have a sit-down sled...
And my dogs go the the vet when they need it. I know two vet techs that will come look at my dog, or I can call my vet and ask them how to treat a dog and they will tell me so I do not have to go to their office There is a reason why I am studying to be a vet...and of course they go at least every 3 years to get their rabies vaccinations(because I cannot give them). I spent over $500 last year on Curtis trying to figure out what was wrong with him, and the vets never did anything other than give me a big bag of fluids to give him as an IV...he fixed himself basically, and that really shook my confidence in vets, so now I am much more comfortable treating my own dogs.

| Barked: Thu Oct 23, '08 1:31pm PST | | | | | | Fun on the Run, I compliment you on your self-care of your dogs. My husband grew up on a cattle ranch, and raised his own heelers as working cow dogs. Aside from anything major, and rabies vaccines, he treated his own dogs. We still do that today. If a dog is in really bad shape, they go in. If not, we treat them ourselves. My husband actually worked side by side with their vet for a long time, and the vet taught him how to treat a lot of things on both dogs and horses.
It's just like people. We don't rush ourselves to the ER every time we get a scrape or bump...

| Barked: Thu Oct 23, '08 4:16pm PST | | | | | | Thai, you really need to go look at some kennels and talk to mushers in person *with an open mind*. I think that you'd be surprised.
Always on the defensive... it's hard not to be when you are constantly attacked with ignorant statements for even mentioning mushing.

A Tired Dog is a- Happy Dog. |
| Barked: Thu Oct 23, '08 5:23pm PST | | | | | | Most mushers are proficient at treating their dogs for all sorts of things unless it is a chronic condition.
Big kennels that I've known have vets do home visits for vaccines and check ups.
There are also vaccine clinics, etc and training sessions like the one for Tahquamenon in the UP. There are pre race vet checks in most races and you have to have proof of vaccinations, etc.
And as for me, my dogs go every year for check ups (I like hearing vets compliment me about my dog care, how their coats are so pretty, how well they look, etc), I do my own vaccines except for the 3 yr rabies.
Heck, I took Raven in for a split nail yesterday, which the vet told me keep doing what I was doing (keep clean, bootie, anti-biotics), there was forty bucks down the drain.
Why am I so defensive? It's become a habit.
I'm involved in a unique sport in which people often have misconceptions about and this is OT but contributes to my defensive self, I own a "pit bull" which are feared by many and banned in cities and states. And all of this is because of ignorance, and if not that close mindedness. I have to be on my toes.
And, I'm not unwilling to acknowledge other great dog sports or other wonderful care given to dogs.
As for dogs being forced to run...You can't push a rope, dogs will only run on fear (if at all) for so long and training will only take you so far. If a dog doesn't want to go, it's not going to go. And I think a lot of mushers would agree with me on that.
I'll take being called silly a compliment.

| Barked: Wed Oct 29, '08 4:03pm PST | | | | | | LOL Thai, I'm not yackin' just at you. ...I think that was for a different poster. It's been too long since the last post, I've got a short term memory for this stuff.
I was kind of disappointed with this episode. I think they could have showed the back of the pack mushers, some of the Lower 48 mushers. They just stuck with the top guys. They could have had a lot more interesting episode if they included those other guys and girls.
Oh well.
I really like Martin Buser, he's a real sportsman about everything. Rohn did a great job too.
I'm wondering if they're going to be showing Ed Steilstra or Jake B. I can't spell his last name right off. Jake is so sweet with the dogs, I really enjoyed watching him at the kennel when the Seney 300 was going on. I just found out Trent Herbst is running a team of Steilstra's dogs this 09.
There's a kennel site I think people should check out, I really like their attitudes and their dogs always look great, Ed came in 29th this year's Iditarod.
Their site is www.natureskennel.com
They've got really cool pics, a little blog, all kinds of stuff, really fun to explore!
When's the next show on, did they say Nov 11?

Forever young |
| Barked: Wed Oct 29, '08 7:12pm PST | | | | | | Still haven't even seen the second episode. I've been crazy busy. Don't want to get into an argument either. If you're in doubt about mushing, go meet some mushers and see some kennels in person.
In the meantime, there's plenty going on for those of us training sled dogs...Hopefully I'll watch the tape of episode two sometime this week.
