Wolf Moon's Aspen (In Memorium
Forever young |
| Barked: Tue Oct 21, '08 7:22pm PST | | | | | | Okay so the next episode is tonight!
I finally watched the first one and here are my thoughts.
To tell the truth I was a little disappointed. I'm not sure exactly what I expected but I think the show promised more than it delivered. It was promoted as a "reality show" but to me it's more of a documentary - not that there's anything wrong with that. Of course, I've only seen a few reality shows so I'm no expert. It just seemed a little vague and jumped around. Someone who doesn't know the race might even be a little confused as to what is happening.
There was a little behind-the-scenes kennel stuff but I think there should have been more. There is a lot more they could delve into. The same with the race. And the same clip over and over and over.
Also, what's with Jeff King? He's sounding like Rick Swenson did for a while...I know things can be edited out of context so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt but he comes across as a jerk. That's too bad because I like and greatly respect him. I've met some people who really don't like Jeff but I've met Jeff too.
That said, the footage was GREAT. And it's hard to judge a show just by the first episode. I just think it didn't have the depth it needed. Or maybe I'm just being overly critical. I think some of the best Iditarod documentaries were the 2-hour specials that USA Network broadcasted 1999-2001. It's a shame they stopped doing those. I really like official Iditarod DVDs from the last couple of years too. Those are great! And I think "Sled Dogs: An Alaskan Epic" is great too.
Aside note, the first episode showed Lance Mackey resting for several hours at the second checkpoint, rather than blowing through.
I will say I thoroughly enjoyed the show and I AM looking forward to the next episode.

A Tired Dog is a- Happy Dog. |
| Barked: Tue Oct 21, '08 10:25pm PST | | | | | | Whewee, deep breath.
I like Rick Swenson, he is known to be a jerk. He's not into the glam or to be a show off, not saying Jeff is like that, but they can both be very cocky. Difference is, Jeff's friendly with the cameras.
Anyways, as for Thai. Sled dogs ARE one of the most well cared for animals in the world. Yes, I agree some hundreds of sled dogs are being abused/neglected every day, those dog owners should be brought to justice. But I also keep in mind and I believe everyone else should too, that THOUSANDS of pets across the US and millions across the world are being abused/neglected.
Name a situation/sport/anything where animals are as carefully monitored than in the sled dog sport? Name something that more time, money and effort is put into than sled dogs? I can only think of horse racing, which some would frown upon too. And one consulation you can take from that is atleast sled dogs don't get tapped with whips.
This isn't just a hobby for some, this is a life. Dogs are our life.
Another thing I want to get off my chest is that mushers, recreational or pros are doing something that humans and dogs have done for hundreds of years, these dogs were bred to pull and run, why would people condem a "way of life", sure we've got snowmobiles these days, but why kill off a tradition? These dogs LOVE what they do. They're complete, they're fulfilling all their needs, exercise, there's discipline, tons of affection and the best food on earth for a dog. What is there to complain about?
Mushers are more monitored than pet owners, you stick a dog in a back yard and forget about it except maybe at feeding time, it's not a crime. But a musher takes out a team and gets critized for it.
There's alot more I could say but, it's late and I want to watch a show.
As for my take on the second episode.
I cried when Joe Garnie scratched, it was crap what happend to his bags, all his equipment THOUSANDS of dollars worth of gear was pitched, and he was the only musher to have that happen. BULL POOP.
And when I saw him on the episode I almost cried again. There's a great man and a great musher. A man who would be an awesome icon for the mushing world. They didn't show him enough on there.
Linton and Franklin kind of made me mad. But, any who, I look forward to reading more posts.

Fun On The- Run Kennel- Racing
09 Junior- Iditarod 8th! |
| Barked: Wed Oct 22, '08 1:33am PST | | | | | | I haven't seen the latest episode yet...must get my hands on it somehow Craving...
Also, I think the For the Love of Dogs dvd would be great for Thai to watch. It really shows Martin's dedication to his dogs, and is basic way of life. And the clips from Good Morning America would be good to see too...
As for Jeff King...I don't know...he kind of bores me, and he is just a little too cocky, but he does have reason to be. He had the best team this year, and if he had not goofed he would have own the race. But Lace outsmarted him, and won

no sled dogs are not treated the BEST thats just stupid to lump one thing in a whole
and u dont need to tell me about all the stupid owners in this world i see them all the time not taking care of the dog wondering why it bit the neighbor when it got off leash or pulled its leash off its dog house
yes there lots of abused and neglected dogs out in the world. But to say a statement that sled dogs are treated the best makes no sense can u say for certain?.... what about the people that do agility these people care for their pup less than the sled dog owners
and horse racing is a stupid sport that should be outlawed the jockey and the horse take horrid beating's to the body and the diffe
rence is the humane chose it the animal does not.
To all people who treat the faimly pet or your working dog with respect and gratitude do a little dance make a little love and have fun with your animal

♠- Ruger- ♠

|
| Barked: Wed Oct 22, '08 1:56pm PST | | | | | | Wolf, I kind of agree with you, I really enjoy the show but I don't know really what I was expecting... I think because it's by the producers of Deadliest Catch, I was expecting something more in that style (they spend a while with each boat, with all the people on the boats, etc.). Then again I can't see how the participants in the Iditarod would like having camera crews tag along like they do on the boats, BOL!
The style of the show is more like Ice Road Truckers, on the History channel. Some clips along the way, a few cameras mounted in a few trucks, and they catch up with some of the truckers briefly while they're stopped loading/offloading.
I really do enjoy the scenery. Alaska is the most beautiful place I've ever been. The show is enjoyable. The only thing is we already know the outcome... unlike Deadliest Catch and Ice Road Truckers.
Ruger enjoys it as well... everyone else goes to bed and just Ruger and I watch Iditarod. It's funny, he isn't allowed on the furniture, but I let him up to cuddle and watch it with me. And he actually watches it! It's funny... when the mushers are shouting commands at the dogs, Ruger pays the most attention. Silly border collie...

Wolf Moon's Aspen (In Memorium
Forever young |
| Barked: Wed Oct 22, '08 6:02pm PST | | | | | | I think the point Raven is trying to make is that MOST sled dogs are treated well, like most pets are and to condemn all mushers because of the bad few is like condemning all pet owners because of the bad few.
I don't want to really get into it about Jeff King. Jeff is Jeff and that's all I have to say about that. LOL Never said I didn't like Rick Swenson either. The other night I watched an old Iditarod video from the early '90s and it showed Rick Swenson in his dog yard and you could tell he had a really great relationship with them. It also showed him in his house with some retired dogs who were lounging around on the furniture!
Anyway, can't wait to see the second episode of "Toughest Race On Earth" when I get the tape in the next few days.
More soon! | | | | |

| Barked: Wed Oct 22, '08 6:35pm PST | | | | | | Once again, I remind myself why I shouldn't have checked back.
Thanks everyone who can understand what I was trying to say and mean.
I don't judge love , no one can say I love my dog(s) more than you love yours.
And as for best care, I'll let the vet expenses, high quality food and meat, equipment, poop scooping, time and attention speak for itself.

| Barked: Thu Oct 23, '08 5:42am PST | | | | | | I enjoyed it, personally.
I think some people forget that there are bad people in every sport involving animals. No sport is perfect, and no sport is terrible (except dog fighting, but in my mind that is NOT a sport). Sure some dogs run because they're forced, but most run because they love it. You can punish the sport, just the bad people in it.

| Barked: Thu Oct 23, '08 6:23am PST | | | | | | Rolls eyes.............. WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS ON THE DEFENSE? makes me wonder........... yeah raven and i think any one with a dog can relate to those things u just mentioned i know a girl who just spent over 2,000 or something close on XRAYS ....
I think the way u treat your dog has everything to do with the person you are inside ....... but to bring up the BEST is silly it really is i have never in all my life met or heard of a Agility dog getting beat or ignored on a 6 ft or less chain but i have heard it time in time again with sled dogs... Why is that ? ... and fun on the run how often do your dogs go to the vet or any musher on here ? when u have 200 dogs how can u find the time to take every dog to the vet u would have to go to the vet almost everyday and working dogs tend to get hurt and injured a lot does it go to the vet... I have met some musher's never been to there home..
anyhoot about the show it was cool... it's crazy how many people fall off or just loose there dogs.... it upset me to know that one lady lost 2 of her dogs and just kept on truckin that just insane i would never leave my pups behind ... and than the diabetic guy loosing his team that must have been a scare but it was really nice to see someone help him... i can only imagine what it must be like u and the dogs nothing else around... i did not realize that u could take hay with u for the ride... and it was super sad to see that guy have to pull out cause his food did not make it.... why do mushers sit? i think they should have to stand to endure the same as the dogs who are pulling htem
