A Tired Dog is a- Happy Dog. |
| Barked: Thu Oct 16, '08 1:19am PST | | | | | | I almost didn't even look into this topic, for obvious reasons, I get tired of constantly defending fellow mushers, etc.
But I really enjoyed the show , I shrieked when Joe Garnie came out of the shoot! LOL. Kept me on the edge of my seat, I can't wait 'til the next episode!

| Barked: Thu Oct 16, '08 8:00am PST | | | | | | Glad you did look, Raven. I too get frustrated with the mushing controversy. Many of the charges don't make sense but people believe them anyway because they don't have the full story.
We're supposed to get the recording of the show today! I can't wait to see it! Sounds great.

| Barked: Thu Oct 16, '08 12:04pm PST | | | | | | Awesome Alice, I'm sure you'll really enjoy it.
I had Rover post in the beginning, but after that, I was afraid it would get nasty later on in the posts.
I really liked Martin Buser's talk about husky builds, etc and Rohn was good about talking about the dog wheel.
I've met Tom Roig and he almost made me cry when they were showing him decide to scratch...I'll probably cry if they show Rodney Whaley scratch too. Both great guys, but there's so much I could go into about being prepared and how much your own health can handle.
I'm seriously going to become an Iditarod Insider next year, LOL.
Happy tails and Trails everyone!

Neuter & Spay - It's the Most- Humane Way

| Barked: Sat Oct 18, '08 6:39am PST | | | | | | The show can be seen online here:

I had a number of concerns having watched the first episode.
First of all, Lance's injured leaders did not appear to receive any extra care. He also kept blowing through checkpoints even though he had injured dogs (ear, leg).
There are only forty vets, and it states they do about 10,000 dog checks during the race. Yet they kept showing mushers moving right through checkpoints without so much as a glance from a veterinarian.
Also, the part about the skeletal change was very interesting. Since few (if any) Iditarod mushers OFA their breeding stock, how are we to know that these severe skeletal changes aren't bad for the dogs in the long run? What happens to these dogs later in life? Few mushers keep dogs past their prime, so of course they would not know if they end up crippled from hip dysplasia or arthritis.
They showed a few kennels, but not to a realistic extent. I know the location of a number of large kennels and have looked at them via Google Earth (and have been to them in person). The images on Google Earth speak volumes.
Looking forward to the next episode. I'm working on a full write-up.

Fun On The- Run Kennel- Racing
09 Junior- Iditarod 8th! |
| Barked: Sat Oct 18, '08 3:10pm PST | | | | | | Haluna- They cut the mushers time in a checkpoint down for the purpose of the show. They never showed the checkers making sure they had their gear, or the vets checking the dogs, or much else. They only have a few hours to show 11+ days of being on the trail so certain things had to be cut.
Also, most mushers do keep their dogs when they get old. Martin Buser has a special area of his kennel where the older dogs are kept. Some mushers give them to Junior Mushers like me, and some give them to mushers who are just getting started in the whole business.
And Martin Buser was on Good Morning America yesterday! Along with my friend Karin Hendrickson! I just watched it from the GMA website, and it is really good

| Barked: Sat Oct 18, '08 3:35pm PST | | | | | | Yeah, Raven, it was too bad he had to scratch...
Haluna, not sure how the Google Earth photos of dog yards "speak volumes" when one can't see what activity is going on in them that way. One has to be there on the ground for that.
I've met many older dogs, here and elsewhere. Many of the older, retired sled dogs (12, 15 or even 17 years old) are in better shape than some 8-year-old pets I've seen!
I'm not going to comment on the show as I haven't seen it yet, I will post on that when I get a chance to see it. I have the recording but I'll check out Haluna's link too. Thanks!

A Tired Dog is a- Happy Dog. |
| Barked: Sat Oct 18, '08 4:26pm PST | | | | | | HUGE SIGH!!!!
I agree with fun on the run about checkpoints and older dogs.
You'll find most sled dogs live to a HEALTHY ripe old age, some live to be 16-17 years. I'm not going to argue about that stuff.
But I do have to say this, so my blood pressure will go down:
Mushers (that compete in Iditarod down to the most recreational team you can think of) have made a huge commitment to their dogs and themselves, they spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on their dogs for proper vet care, treatments, care, equipment, etc. They sometimes live away from family and friends to be with their dogs and train, they spend most of their lives with the dogs (bonding, caring for, and training, etc), they spend countless hours educating themselves on dog behavior, nutrition, anything and everything to make sure they have the most healthy dogs possible.
Sled dogs are the most well cared for animals in the world.
There's a lot more I could add, but nothing and I mean nothing can match the feeling of when you're on the back of a sled/rig and your dogs are running ahead with big panting smiles on their faces, it's spiritual.
You can't "PUSH" a rope, it has to be "PULLED" and anyone who has worked with dogs know you can't make a dog do something it doesn't want to do, training will only take you so far. And dogs can only run on fear for so long.
The dogs in these races WANT to be there, they wouldn't have it any other way.
I'm not going to say everyone who runs sled dogs is great at it, nor is everyone who owns a pet great at it.
You don't see anyone dissing all pet owners because of one irresponsible owner (except for maybe PETA). We should hold individuals accountable for wrong doings, not the whole society.
BIG breath. BOL. | | | | |

| Barked: Sun Oct 19, '08 5:46pm PST | | | | | | I agree, Raven!
Well, we've got the tape and a TV/VCR that *seems* to work so we're going to try to watch it tonight (and pop some popcorn on the stove - hope THAT goes okay). Could never get Haluna's link to work.
In the meantime, the Good Morning America segement on Martin Buser (4-time Iditarod winner) and Karin Hendrickson is on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYwlbx_zlBk. It is REALLY good IMHO. It really reveals a lot about the life of mushers and their dogs for its short running time. It tells about how the dogs are central and that fame, fortune and glamor don't go hand-in-hand with the sport.
I can especially relate to Karin and her position. The dogs take over!
