Neuter & Spay - It's the Most- Humane Way

I don't have a vendetta against the sport. I simply do not support unethical, irresponsible, neglectful and abusive treatment of the dogs involved. I have competed in a small handful of mid-distance and sprint races in the Midwest. I continue to run dogs for fun and I support humane mushing. I have an interest in forming an international organization devoted to humane mushing, which will define and promote ethical and responsible sled dog treatment and guardianship, as well as fight for better legal standards of care for these dogs worldwide. I've been guardian to sled dogs for nearly 11 years now, and I love the sport - as long as the dogs are treated with compassion.

I'm also very interested to see if the Discovery Channel folks include filming of how these dogs live after the race. Showing 100-200+ dogs chained to uninsulated houses would make a huge impact on a lot of people, as it is the norm for many Iditarod mushers. However, I somehow doubt that this graphic reality will be included.

Actually having 100+ dogs is not the norm for Iditarod mushers...I only know of less than ten kennels that have that many dogs, and they have tons of kennel help to care for the dogs along with themselves.

I am not going to fight anymore over this subject. It is getting old, and Haluna's mother refuses to see sense. I love my dogs, and they love to run, therefore I race them.

You claim to support humane mushing, yet you condemn any musher who races anything without bothering to see the conditions of the dogs.

Seems to me that it's better to support mushers who manage to race without abusing dogs, and trying to help the ones going wrong to provide better care. Immediately accusing someone of animal abuse and only spewing negativity at them does not make them want to listen to you. If you want to change things, then you need to start changing how you approach people.

Also, exaggerations only anger us more. Yes, there are cruel mushers, but the vast majority are nothing like you describe as the norm. Or at least in my little corner of mushingdom it's not.

That's one of the things I puzzled about for a long time, generally people who have been involved with mushing and have actually been to the kennels realize that most mushers are humane. I too support humane mushing - which most mushing is. Inhumane mushers are few and far between.

Getting back to the upcoming show (it's tonight, isn't it? Darn I wish I had a TV), I found the full Lance Mackey/Conan O'Brien interview on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH5LzmR0n7Q and I hear that ABC has interviewed Martin Buser (FYI for those who don't know the mushing world: Martin Buser is a 4-time Iditarod champ). Hopefully that one will be online too.

Everyone, be sure to let us know what you think of the show! I hear they will release it on DVD this December so I'll get to see it then at least.

My malamute came from a working line of sled dogs (his dad was the bad guy's lead dog in Iron Will...) and when I was a kid he spent many winters pulling us up a huge sledding hill and loved every minute of it. Ranch dogs die every year working, police dogs die every year while working, just as people die doing those things every year as well. People's pet dogs die every year from various things. My dog died back in August we believe from eating a rodent that someone had poisoned. Does that make me a bad person because I let my dog live outside and she ate something that someone else had poisoned?

Things happen. People die climbing mountains every year. I'd rather die climbing a mountain than succumbing to cancer laying in a hospital bed...

Death from abuse is a different story, and I think people that abuse and neglect animals deserve punishment of the worst kind, but having a dog do what it was bred to do and what it was taught to do is hardly an offense...

well my parents and I really enjoyed the show. I think for us it is very interesting because we have never had that much interaction with mushing.

I did watch it and i do want to make sure dogs are treated good... but to have a a camera around u all the time duing a race u want to win makes me think they are good mushers look at the way Lance mackay went and broke up the fight between dogs his dogs where not the least bit freaked out or skittish like he might hit them.... he yells where a team don't beat up your team members... he loves his dogs u can tell i always thought that... Jeff king had 2 dogs in his bag to help rest them so to me that seems dog first... U can see the general concern for the dogs that had to be dropped at check points......... i think when u try to make a fact it should not be pushed......... what i know is there are lots of sled dogs mistreated everyday of every year ,,,, but in the flip theres tons of sled dogs that are treated great and loved.. bottom line this needs to be a agree to disagree... yes 100's of dogs are dropped every year but when i was watching those mushers they looked concerned for there pup. they do not want to drop team members... also what about the guy who is diabetic he fed his dogs first him 2nd. he was dealing with his diogs well trying to get some food in him... I'll keep watching and doing research visiting some kennels this year and really get my own eyes on view of what it is like. i donlt know what to believe so i'm just doing lots of research form both sides of the fence and trying to get some unbiased info but its not really out there.. I love the northern breeeds and will always own a husky.. or something like it ............ dogs on chains left with no to little interaction with humans is not right... leaving a dog on a chain for most of its life with little to no humane interaction is not ok.. if u leave your dog on a chain a lot of your time should be spent out with your dogs caring for them............ this is like saying every kennel is a puppy mill thats just not the truth ... dog lovers need to stick together and know thats it's not right to treat an animal bad for are own gain..............but i liked tjhe show and have it on my dvr so i can watch it ... bottom line for me is i have a hard time knowing who is right who is telling the truth i want to get up and personal with the life and judge for myself

Haven't seen it yet but someone we know is taping it so hopefully I'll get to see it this weekend sometime. From what I've heard, it was good, with behind the scenes footage and such.

Thai, there are a lot of sled dog races and kennels in MN so you should be able to meet some mushers!

I think there are copyright issues with posting it to YouTube and it would probably be removed.

However, there is another site you might check - hulu.com, which has a lot of TV shows. I haven't looked to see if the Iditarod show is on there because it loads slower than YouTube (at least on my computer) and I can't really watch anything. You might be able to though.
