There is an article about it in the Fairbanks Daily News Miner today! I watched it and laughed so hard, and Lance was just like he is in real life.

Heidi, dogs die every year in the Iditarod.

The first death this past year occurred in the team of John Stetson: a seven-year-old dog named Zaster died on March 8th from aspiration pneumonia. The second death this past year occurred in the team of Jennifer Freking: a three-year-old dog named Lorne died after being struck by a snowmobile on March 10th - yet Freking continued the race. The third death this past year occurred in the team of Ed Iten: a four-year-old male named Cargo died on March 11, between Elim and White Mountain. The reason for Cargo's death is unknown. 506 dogs were dropped from this year's Iditarod teams due to becoming injured and/or too ill to continue.

It will be interesting to see if the Discovery Channel show covers the fatalities and injuries fully, or at all. My only hope is that the show will allow more people to see how much these dogs are put through in the race, both mentally and physically, and they will realize that this is inhumane.

Yes, the poster has a personal vendetta against sled dog racing (it really weirded me out for a while since she's had experience with mushing) and has posted a lot on the husky and sports forums...Only a matter of time until she posted here.

Losing a dog is a musher's worst nightmare and it was awful that there were three lost last year. But the thing to keep in mind is that there were well over a thousand dogs in the race. If you watched a thousand non-racing dogs over two weeks, the chances of something happening to at least one of them are very high. Aspen died quite suddenly while running up a flight of stairs. Do we suddenly call stairs inhumane?

Jen Freking thought she would quit the race after the snowmachiner hit her team but the uninjured dogs still wanted to go so she and her husband continued on and she was voted Most Inspirational Musher for persevering despite the tragedy. I know she still misses Lorne and I'm sure John Stetson and Ed Iten were just as devistated by their losses.

Most mushers don't plan to finish with all of their dogs. Many are dropped for reasons other than injury and illness. There are thousands of other reasons for dropping. Plus, many mushers scratch and those teams don't finish.

So there is my take. It will be very interesting to see what Discovery's take is.
