What kills me about BSL is that a way to prevent 90%+ of fatal and near-fatal dog maulings does exist: it's called (1) getting the dogs inside the house and off the chains, and (2) getting the dogs speutered. How many fatal dog maulings out there were caused by altered, inside dogs? I imagine almost none, the exceptions being infants - in which case the maulings are almost never caused by aggression.

BTW, a Pomeranian mauled a baby to death. So did a lab puppy.

Getting the dogs inside the house, off the chains and speutered would mean that someone has to actually be RESPONSIBLE for doing so, which is not the case with SOME of the owners of these types of dogs. There's still Neanderthal ways of thinking for some men when it comes to neutering their dogs. I saw an episode of Dog Whisperer where some guy from Argentina had a Boxer and a English Bulldog, both were seriously aggressive towards eachother and peeing everywhere. Ceasar was all like "Neuter!!!!" and the guy was all like "I don't believe in that".Ceasar asked why and the guy replied it was his "culture" that did not believe in that because it makes them "less of a man" . thinking
People need to be educated about what breeds are best for them, not which one looks cool walking next to them with huge chains hanging from thier necks.

Yeah, that's a typical problem in Latin America, where the "culture" is obsessed with machismo... They'll alter their females, but not their males.

Other than low-cost spay-neuter, there's not a lot we can do - legal enforcement-wise - to get more dogs neutered. But I think that huge, ginormous, ridiculously high fines are in order for people who keep their dogs chained up in the backyard. That really IS the #1 cause of dog aggression, because it forces a dog to define its territory.

But instead these silly "breed bite statistics" - none of which are statistically significant, none of which verify their data, and none of which use random sampling - are gospel for politicians and insurance companies. It's really offensive.

Wow, people need to control their dogs. I hate that so many owners take no time to socialize their pit bulls

Those parents were irresponsible parents. It's sickening. How can you possibly blame the dog for this? APT's were THE american family dog back about half a century ago. They have been demonized by the media. It makes me really angry.

This dog was obvioulsy neglected and there is NO excuse for this toddler being out in the yard. I'm just disgusted cause in the clip one of the guys interviewed says that people shouldn't own these 'dangerous" dogs if they cannot handle them or something.

How about those people shouldn't have children (and dogs, of any breed)? I say spay and neuter the parents!

How do they know it was a Pit? Did they test the blood. Most are mixes now a days anyways. Hope the kid pulls through though, sad.

Lyotto- they don't know it was a Pit. Pits are mixes anyway, there is no such thing as a purebred pit since it is a AST and ABT cross. sad for the kid indeed...wounds like that could take forever to heal not to mention the emotional damage. all it takes is one bad incident with a dog to create a "dog hater for life".
