 | | | | Hey pups, if anyone out there is in Utah, please read this and attend the City council meeting. We must not let this happen. Here's what I wrote to my Senators.
Dear Senator Waddoups & Senator Davis,
First of all Senators, CONGRATULATIONS on your victories!! You both truly
deserve it!! I voted for both of you this election as I promised the last
time we spoke and I am thrilled that you won. I appreciate all of your work
and support on the animal cruelty bill. WE DID IT!!! It was a pleasure
meeting you Senator Davis at the Capitol for the animal lobby day.
Senators, I am writing on a new matter that has our community very upset and
I'm hoping you can help. It is the renovation of the West Valley Animal
Shelter. They want to install a
(in
their words) a medium sized gas chamber
for euthanasia.
This is a torturous, painful and slow death. These animals are piled in on
top of each other and then left to fight until their paws are bloody just
trying to get out. They bleed out of their noses and mouth, vomit, defecate
and struggle to
stay alive.
Last year the West Valley shelter euthanized 2400 animals in just that
shelter. The facility Director for the West Valley Animal Shelter, Kelly
Davis, says that they will only use the gas chamber on "rare
occasions" for aggressive dogs and dogs that feel too much pain to the human touch. I find
it hard to believe that there are that many "aggressive" dogs that
come into the shelters as I've been a volunteer and fostered these dogs. Often
times they are just terrified, wouldn't you be? Why not tranquilize the
"aggressive" dogs with Acepromazine which is fairly inexpensive and
then humanely
euthanize them. It just doesn't make any sense to me that they
would install such a costly killing machine only to use it on "rare
occasions".
The Humane Society of the United States, the American Veterinary Medical
Association, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals,
the
American Humane Association, and the National Animal Control Association
have all determined injection of sodium pentobarbital is the most humane,
safest, least stressful and most professional means of euthanasia. I have to
agree as I have had to euthanize 2 of my beloved pets. I wouldn't have it
done any other way.
I believe that the money that the shelter would save by using sodium
pentobarbital which is fairly less expensive to euthanize could be put
towards spay/neuter programs and educating the public on responsible pet
ownership. Let's face it, if people were educated on how to be a
responsible pet
owner,
there would be a lot less homeless pets. I mean
isn't that our main goal here? No more homeless pets?
There will be a City Council meeting on November 18th at West Valley City
located at 3600 Constitution Blvd. at @ 6:30 pm and another on November 19th
at Taylorsville City located at 2600
West Taylorsville Blvd. @ 6:30 pm. I
have contacted channel 2 news and channel 13 news in hopes of having them
there. Although I'm not in those districts, I will still attend to
silently speak out for the innocent who can't. We need to be their voice.
Senators Waddoups and Davis, I am begging you for your help on this or any
ideas you may have. Once they start laying the gas lines it will be too
late. If you would please get back to me as soon as possible I would
greatly appreciate it, time is running out.
Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to hearing from you
soon.
Sincerely,
Adrienne Sanders | | | | |
