I just wanted to post about the city of Calgary and their success. I hope others can used their example.

They have no BSL. They do have a dangerous dog act - a dog of any breed can earn a DD title by attack infractions and then have restrictions put on it.

They have no MSN. Instead they have a responsible dog ownership education program that starts right in the elementary grades.

They have a 98% licensing compliance rate - which means of the 4800 dogs they admitted in 2006, 88% went home within 24 hours. In a city with a population of 1 million people and 100 thousand+ dogs, the single animal control facility only needed to find homes for 338. The only euthanized were those deemed unhealthy and untreatable - 5%.

The City of Calgary has built its entire program on a foundation of responsible pet ownership as opposed to the traditional animal control regulation.

They educate toward having their citizens follow four pillars of pet ownership. This is what is taught in our grade shools here.

1. License and permanently identify your companion animal.

2. Spay or neuter your companion animal. Do not allow accidental litters.

3. Provide the necessary food, care, exercise, grooming and training for your companion animal.

4. Do not allow your companion animal to become a nuisance or threat in your community.

You can read here an interview with the Bill Bruce, who started on this project in 1981, and by 1994 had ended unnecessary euthanasia for dogs in Calgary.

Calgary, One of the most Effective Animal Control Programs in North America

Jake- MSN is Mandatory Spay/Neuter laws.

This is great. And is definitely what we need to be pushing for across the US. Because of how many of us view our animals people seem to have gotten the idea that dogs are to blame. In reality by law, animals are the responsibility of their owner, and it's up to us, the owner, to protect our animals from the public while protecting the public from our animals.

Way to go Calgary!!!

I'm going to swipe these links and post them on my blog. Feel free to stop by it and share your comments/suggestions or just say hi!!
