Pro-BSL columnist Kerry Dougherty is once again spewing pittie hate on pilotonline.com. While many wonderful Dogsters here know she can't be influenced by truth and statistics, this "article" is a blog and you can all leave comments for others to read. wink

http://home.hamptonroads.com/blog/index.cfm?uid=53 quoted below:

"Pit bull 2, small dogs 0

Oh my. Look what another lovable pit bull has done.

Wait.

We all know there's nothing inherently dangerous about this breed. At least that's the tedious refrain we hear from pit bull lovers.

Remember: If a person is mauled or a small dog is savaged, it's not fair to blame the pit.

Blame the owner, the breeder or the little dogs living next door.

If all else fails, blame the media. "

I'm not even sure WHAT to say to this brilliant one, and her first two commenters. That guy that says "I cringe everytime I see a pit bull at PetSmart", I'm curious if they even know whether they are looking at a pit bull or not. No one for BSL ever seems to refer to these breeds by their REAL names giving me the impression they really don't know much about them, just media-based fear.

Seriously. If she's going to spread so much hate why not grow a backbone and leave a way to discuss it with her.

I've been Googling to try and find a *complete* list of the dogs that have been declared "Dangerous" in Italy and post it, and ask if any of her supporters have any of those breeds...and say well..you're next then. But I can't seem to find one that's not in Italian and unfortunately I don't live near my grandmom to get her to translate!!

Thanks Shakes for posting. Not really happy to see Cruella Doughtery at it again, but she's so da**ed close-minded that nothing gets through to her. It's a waste of an email to contact her. But if you want to: Reach Kerry at (757) 446-2306 or kerry.dougherty@cox.net.

I seriously thinks she gets her kicks from being so full of hate.

Raskol thanks for posting the link. Here is what I just emailed to her:

Dear Ms. Dougherty,

While everyone is entitled to their opinion I have to say that I read your comments with a sense of disappointment. Not because you seem to feel pit bulls are dangerous dogs. Not because your attitude carried a sense of mockery towards those who love and own Pit Bulls. For the record I don't own one. I am not part of the "tedious refrain we hear from pit bull lovers" you referred to in your post.

I am however a dog lover who cares about the safety of other dogs and people.

My disappointment comes from the feeling that you have the opportunity, with your position as a writer to help solve the problem, not just throw fuel on the existing fire.

Contrary to what many people believe, many dog attacks stem from dogs being under-socialized, not from being trained to be aggressive or even because it is inherent because of the breed they are. There are many friendly non-aggressive dogs of every breed. Proof that they do exist is everywhere.

So why not use your column to educate instead of inflame? Why not talk about the dangers owners create when they keep their dogs in their homes or yards and never bother to take them on walks, go to the park or allow them to develop the social skills they need to be positive members of our society? If people kept their kids locked in their homes or yards and then they somehow got loose... How prepared would they be to interact with people they meet on the street in a socially acceptable manner? With no social skills to rely on?

It saddens me that you have this opportunity to create positive change, but instead you use it to create more prejudice. Something our country as a whole does not benefit from in any way, shape or form.
