Neurological problems, vet is stumped. Please help!

This forum is for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog.

I agree with Sabi, find a new vet. Yours wanted to kill your dog when he didn't even know what was wrong or if she could get better.

Also I would do something serious to your fence. You don't know if your dog got into a patch or was maliciously fed drugs. Have you considered moving? I don't believe I would want to live next to a pot patch and the kind of people it will attract.

I agree with Sabi and Fritz. I would find a new vet. Considering moving is also a good idea. What kind of people does that pot patch attract? What will they be making next would be the questions I'd be asking myself. I am glad Sugar is ok. We needed some good news! happy dancesnoopydog

I'm glad Sugar is okay! big grin applause I hope you can figure out a way to secure the fence...i know we sometimes try to dig out...our back yard is a sand pit laugh out loud so it's easy to dig out so mom placed some bricks under the bottom where there was a little space. It's worked so far.

Sabi: "I have a really hard time with a vet who would dismissively suggest euthanasia as an option without a diagnosis."

This, exactly! If I were that vet I would be apologizing profusely...especially if you told her or she saw the pot patches next door. Find a new vet with more experience, that was a super-quick and too strongly suggested option to PTS with everything considered. Mostly because your dog is 11, IMHO. It sounded like a poisoning to me, I was thinking about this last night and it reminded me of the last anti-freeze drinking incident I saw years back. I came back her to post if the vet checked for that...

This is the best news I've heard/read all week! Thanks for the update, I'm so thrilled for you and your pup that she is on the mend. You've really shown how important it is to trust your gut sometimes when it comes to advocating for your dog's health. Good for you!

Thanks again everyone, Sugar really acts like she was never even sick. We are getting the materials to fix the fence today, and the dogs are either in the house or supervised out side for now. We decided we are going to call the Drug Task Force soon, because we really do not want them around us either. I would hate to move because of these people. We have lived here, happily, in the country for almost 10 years. It is definitely a big problem though. I am scared for my family as well as all of my pets too. Our goats are always on that side of the property as well.

As far as the vet situation, I agree that she should have looked harder for a cause. When she came over though, Sugar was at her absolute worst point, and I was even convinced that she wouldn't last much longer. She said it was worse than she had thought, and if we didn't take her to a U.C Davis neurologist right then, that she probably had little chance. She wasn't pushing us into euthanasia, but it seemed like our only options were the neurologist, wait it out, or put her down if she continued to worsen. She had good intentions, I think, and admitted that she was stumped.

Additionally, we are kind of in an in between vets situation. Our old vet and I were not on the same page with vaccinations, good nutrition, or much else. I decided to find a vet who was more supportive. We went to a vet who was 40 minutes away who practices conventional and holistic medicine. However, when I thought Sugar needed immediate help, I chose to take her to the closer vet. She lives about 2 minutes away from us (her office is 10 vs. 40 minutes from us), and she neutered our goat and removed a fox tail from Sabrina for free. She also helped us when our baby goat came down with coccidiosis. I felt that we just knew her better, since we have only briefly seen our new vet one time. Before this time, Sugar had never actually been by by her. I don't think anyone in our family felt the need to immediately put her down, and we are glad that we waited. Our annual appointment with our integrative vet late August, and hopefully we will get to know him better. smile

If its illegal to grow pot or sell it then there must be something to be done. Granted your dog probably tresspassed but if they are endangering children or others by their illegal activities then something can be done. I would contact your local district attorneys office or some other agency higher than your chief of police.

I am glad your dog is doing better. It sounds like sugar got into a pesticide or other chemical though. I am not a vet, but I have a lot of experience with toxic exposures in humans. Marijuana may cause lethargy, but not urinary incontinence or the kind of muscle weakness you mentioned. There are many pesticides out there that could cause most if not all the symptoms you described (ie organophosphates, etc). Regardless, it sounds like everything turned out well. Hope you never have to go through this kind of thing again...

Maybe their not just growing pot? Maybe their manufacturing other drugs and/or byproducts from those drugs and she got into some of that?

I'm really not sure, I suspected that other drugs or pesticides may have been involved, but there's no way to know for sure. I did notice that she was drinking a lot of water for a while there, which might have just been from the steroid injection or the fact that she didn't drink much while sick.

Also, we live in CA, so marijuana is legal with a license. However, we found at least three rules that they are violating right now, one being they are growing too close to our property.

On a good note, yesterday Sugar and Sabrina went fishing with us in our pond. Sugar loves looking in the water when we are in the boat, and was really enjoying herself! Also, today we are going to go on our first walk since the ordeal, so fingers crossed she is really good as new! smile
