Dry skin? Or something...

This forum is for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog.

I wasn't sure if this belonged here or in grooming but I have a question about Titan's skin/fur. I was brushing him out today and I noticed that along his shoulders/ridge line, he seems to have dry skin? It's not the greatest shot but you can see what I mean. It's not something I'm familiar with and I'm not sure how to deal with it. It seems to be confined to his back along the line where his ridge would be if he were a full blown Rhodie because it goes from shoulders to the tail.

Right now he's eating Orijen and gets fish oil squirted on his food daily. Is there anything else I can do or that I *should* do?

Thanks guys! puppy

Have you applied topical flea preventative recently? My Min Pin mix has has the same thing for wks after I apply frontline, it shows a lot after I brush her.

No, not yet. I have to do that soon (I need to buy more this week actually) so I'm sure that's not going to help any. frown

I use to work at a grooming salon, a great remedy for dry skin is oatmeal shampoos. A cheap remedy recommended by a vet I know is tiny bit of baby oil added to the bath water( not applied directly to the skin) , but really oatmeal and other calming shampoos work best ( you can pick up some great ones at most pet stores and sometimes even have conditioners to compliment them). How often are you bathing your dog as is? I know over bathing can cause dryness and skin irritation. I hope this helps, and on a side note, Tunas skin has been dry and itchy due to what we believe are allergies, and flea allergies are incredibly common so just getting frontline on might actually helpsmile

Good suggestion Tuna. Oatmeal is good for sensitive dogs skin and coat. It is very soothing. A good grain free diet might be another item to try. One of our Greys had some skin issues and we tried Nutro Natural Choic Grain Free and it went away. There are limited ingredient diets you can try too if you think this might be an issue.

Good luck.
