What is this THING on Gunner's leg? Is it serious???

This forum is for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog.

I think that is a great idea, Selli... if something IS in there it will help it get out faster and it won't hurt anything.

Thanks Toto and Sellie!

Quick Q, How do I soak it in Epsom salt? I'll pick some up on my way home tomorrow...I'm just thinking about the difficulties in my dog that I have to DRAG to the bathtub... LOL! And how much salt do I put in the water?

I do have a hot compress that I can use in the microwave. smile I'll try that this evening.

If he'll hold still for it you can just lay a warm epsom and water soaked rag over it.. Perhaps laying the hot compress over top of that.

Definately get some warm compresses on it, if it was a snake bite it would ooze and the skin would begin to die off immediately (seen plenty of them), spider bites usually go round, red then sometimes black. He may have run through that wonderful thicket and got a thorn or thorns stuck which would create the line. thinking Keep us posted!

By the way HI! wave

wave TURNER! flowers

Hubs was on nights this week. frown But when he came in he said Gunner's leg was draining. eek I'll look at it again when I get home. I don't know how much it has changed. Hubs said he drained it. All this was going on about an hour before I woke up, so I didn't know about it until he texted me. I'll check it (and check in) when I get back.

I know it doesn't look like staph, but I worry about an infection. I'll call my vet and see if she can call something in to Walmart for me.

Any tips in the meantime?

Hi guys! Sorry I'm just now getting back to you! I've been super busy!

Gunner's leg is still draining. It looks strange but it doesn't look infected. The top nodule burst open exposing skin and has been draining clear fluid. We've been keeping it clean and making sure to put antibiotic ointment on it. Exposed skin is pink and healthy looking, no sign of green, yellow, or even cloudy goop...just pink skin and clear fluid!

It obviously stings when we mess with it, but it doesn't hurt him for us to touch the swolen area anymore. We're keeping an eye on it for sure!

I always keep Betadine on hand to clean wounds..Looks like Gunner has a small slice that broke the skin but if it's not warm to the touch and no redness or oozing of yellow or green it should be fine. Swelling can indicate an infection as can tenderness when touched so keep an eye on it! You can also use a saline solution for cleaning it. You're doing what's right and please keep us posted!
