Novartis Problems (Interceptor)

This forum is for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog.

Three weeks ago I was at my vets to pick up some KD for my honey (to much protiend in her blood & urine, on special diet for a while) and a lady came in to pick up some Interceptor. but heather told her they didn't have any in the size she needed and didn't know when they would get any. Had been notified by novartis that there would be no shipping for a while.

iI was dumb and didn't check to see if they had any for Honey's size as I had 5 tablets at home and I figured it was just a machinery break down or something. Was in there last week to have her urine check and they didn't any interceptor of any size left, no idea when they would get it.

then i learn on one of my golden forums that the nebraska plant has been shut down until they "clean up their act." so to speak. The problem was actually in the human drug section (making Exciderin GasX and I can't remember wht all else) but the entire plant is shut. The article post said that it will be a few months before they are back up and running, and that not only is the Interceptor no being made, neither is Sentinel, and I believe they said Deramaxx and some other NSAIDS, and HW and flea prevention.

Have nay of you had trouble getting any of these items/

My vet warned me that there would probably be a short amount of time when they wouldn't have Interceptor available. Luckily, they had just received a HUGE order before the plant was shut down, so I was able to get six months for both of my girls. Hopefully in 6 months everything will be back and running.

FYI- They also recalled Clomicalm made by Novartis because the pills were getting mixed up, just like what was happening with the Excedrin and Gas-X and the other human meds.

Yes, there are many problems with Novartis right now. They had to recall a lot of Interceptor and other meds and have ceased production until further notice.

Do you have a link to the Interceptor recall? That is not something I have heard.

I work at a veterinary clinic and we don't know when, or if, Novartis will be back in action. We're encouraging our clients to switch to Heartgard in the meantime. Our DVM prefers Heartgard anyway. Instead of Deramaxx we'll be prescribing Previcox, another NSAID which is made by Merial (same makers of Frontline and Heartgard).

ETA: i can never spell Heartgard right.

I had to take Ridley in to have an abscess looked at and asked about this. I ONLY use Interceptor with mine, and only have a one month's supply left for Mulder.

The tech said that based on the information they've been given, production SHOULD be back up sometime next month and the product should be readily available again at that time.

Don't know how reliable that information is, just figured I'd share what I heard.

What I don't understand is one of the women on what use to be called thei-dog forum (now ha a different name) lives in Houston and their clinic just got a big shipment of Interceptor. On one of my goldn retriever forums, one said the clinci they use just got a big shipmkent a couple of days ago. Buyt most others are being told they here is none to be had and if they run out of Intercpetor before it is back in production, they will need to switch to something else.

I can't understand why some clinics are getting and other's aren't.

We thankfully have a few dodes left from taking our winter break. I'm hoping it's enought to get us through until it is available again. I like Mulder won't use anything else. My vet has many brands available but only recommends interceptor for Akitas because it appears to be the safest, most effective treatment for them. That doesn't mean the others are bad,it's just that when it comes to meds and Akitas caution is necessary.
