Still another UTI...

Well, Toto started his peeing in the house again this weekend. Sent him off to the vets yesterday and he has his 6th UTI in less than a year!!!
It's driving me (and him), crazy!!!
We have cultured, ultrasounded, xrayed, sent samples off, and he is on (and has been for two months) urinary acidifiers and cosequin daily. His ph was high at 8 but is now down to 6 so that should be fine.
He eats no grain but with water and he drinks plenty of fresh water because we have a drinkwell fountain and he loves it.
HELP?????

Have you tried d-mannose powder, given daily? This is a natural sugar found in cranberries, but if you take the straight up powder, you get much more d-mannose than just taking a cranberry supplement. We have used this for our old cat, and I have used it myself with very good success. NOW is the brand we use. We get it in the health section of most natural foods stores.

He's on the d-man(sp) tablets from the vets and has been for two months. And, the ph is back down.
He's never shown any crystals at all, which is also strange and would make things easier if he did, BOL!
He was intact and a breeding dog but was neutered at 3 1/2 yrs. No problems with that, but no UTI's before then, either.
Thyroid levels are perfectly normal.
If we weren't doing sterile collections I would wonder if the bacteria wasn't from the sheath, but that is ruled out with the sterile collections. The levels are never high but he starts peeing every couple of hours the second he starts with one, so he is rather sensitive to them for some reason.
They suggested upping the Cosequin since he is on the maintainence dosage. Guess I will try that, too.

Having the same issue but his took a turn when the crystals showed up this time around. Needing to get a culture done but he's had 4 UTI's in the past year. We neutered him last November as they thought the prostate might have been doing it and it did cut back on them for close to a year but then it just came back. I've just been using cranberry powder and making sure he stays hydrated for now. I hope someone can help you out!

Went through this with our cats. Feeding them nothing but grain free wet food, using a fountain with distilled water only, and giving them a Cranimals supplements *seems* to be working. Paws crossed for poor Toto, our cats sympathize. The cats mainly had bacteria present as well, and thankfully never blocked or had major crystals/stones. We even tried raw with them and it made no difference.

We never actually followed through with the specialist because we didn't think 3 UTIs in 2 years was a chronic problem but...

Chance's vet wanted her to see a specialist for a bladder scope.

They were going to look for excess tissue where the umbilical cord would have been.

The way it was explained to us was the bladder was like an inflated balloon and the excess tissue was like where the balloon gets tied off.

That excess tissue can allow bacteria to "hide" from the antibiotics so urine cultures come back clean but then the bacteria can recolonize and present again.

If she had it, they would do surgery to snip it.

Wonder if he has an oddly shaped urethra. I had a male wether (sheep) that required urethral surgery.

Hmmm, could be he's "out of shape", so to speak. He's had four different vets treating him, so I would think one of them would have maybe noticed anything physical irregularity if it could be noticed.
I have heard of the excess tissue thing... one of my Frenchies had some rare bladder thing as a puppy and while doing surgery on her bladder they cleaned up the remnents. My vet said sometimes there is actually a hole left behind.
I think the vets don't get terribly excited because Toto always gets diagnosed immediately as it starts since he pees on MY bed to let me know and they clear up quickly. Right now it's about one every two months.
BUT, it is annoying both to him and to me. Last night he obviously did not feel well and was running a fever as well. Didn't help that it was pouring rain when I got up to make him go outside all three times during the night so when he hopped back on MY pillow I got plenty wet, too!

Toto, Tanuk feels for you. The cats always pee on one of Tanuk's beds when they have a UTI, it's our little signal. Sometimes though if it's in his crate I don't notice right away and I make the poor guy go in his crate with all the pee bedding. I notice now because he gives me a weird look.
