New Proportions Dog Food

This forum is for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog.

As you have no doubt received an announcement from Dogster announcing the new Proportions dog food giving away free samples to try to get you to try it, please be aware that this is a cooked/processed product and as such can only offer as much "whole nutrition" as they add of synthetic vitamins and minerals. Pet food is cooked and processed at high temperatures, here is an article with lots of interesting facts:

Raw Food Rocks!

Cooked, kibbled, dried out grain-based food is not appropriate for our carnivores companions. I've been feeding a raw diet for over 15 years now and the benefits are excellent: fresh breath, clean teeth, no fleas, no itchies, LESS Poop! www.truecarnivores.com

All the additions of grains and veggies probably make this food more grain and veggie based than any meat in there. confused

The protein contents on all but one of the foods don't give me a lot of faith that there's much meat in the food. While I agree that organic, prey model raw, emphasis on organic and prey model, is the best diet that can be offered I have seen dogs not just live but thrive on high quality kibbles and canned diets as well. When Daddy gets allergies the only thing that helps is a good fish based kibble, we tried raw, different kinds of raw meats and it didn't help him. As far as diet goes, it's a very individual matter varying from dog to dog, but as a general rule I won't feed foods under 25% protein unless there's a medical necessity for it.

I have been feeding raw for some time now - 2+ years - and I completely agree that anything in a can or bag that has been cooked is processed and not the kind of species appropriate diet our dogs, cats or ferrets need. They need and will live long healthy lives on raw meaty bones. This is a simple marketing tool being used by this site to con folks into thinking they are giving their pets "healthy - whole" foods.
