another reason to always watch your dogs
no matter how digestible what they're eating is!

i just bought shooter and sumo JUMBO flossies
(spiraled bully sticks)

i know shooter would chew it, but sumo got a jumbo
too because he tends to try and swallow.
well, shooter has long been done with his
and sumo has been VERY noisily nomming
on his.

so i go to the kitchen to give shooter one of the new cookies i bought them and sumo runs in like
everything is normal and he wants a cookie but
acting like he can't get the last piece of bully stick out of his mouth.
so i grab the last "loop" on the flossie...

AND PULLED OUT ALMOST THE WHOLE THING!

he had been softening it and swallowing it,
but not taking pieces off.

it was about an inch of stick that was still hard,
and about 4-5 inches that was soft that had been down his throat! and i pulled it out. gross.

it was really nasty (and smelly), to say the least- but also scary!

if you have ever seen the goonies (which i hope you have) it reminded me of when the lady is pulling the necklaces out of "mouth" 's mouth and they just keep coming and coming and my eyes kept getting bigger and bigger! eek

have you ever had any close calls when it came to chews or toys?

OMD!!! Stinky does the same EXACT thing!

He will be chewing along, but never actually breaks pieces off and it just becomes this white gooey stringy mass of nastiness! Then he proceeds to try and swallow what he's made of it. I can't tell you how many times I've had to pull the things out of his throat. I stopped giving them for a while, and now I just buy the 6 inchers instead of the 12. He seems to be able to eat them a bit easier, I still watch him like a hawk though!

Maybe it has something to do with their frenchie-ness? I've asked so many people about this, and no one seems to have a similar problems, it's so weird that Sumo does. Nice to know I'm not alone! way to go

stinky, i've noticed a habit of frenchies is trying to
swallow everything WHOLE.
and their mouths are so big that they can!
this makes me really nervous about starting him
on a raw diet (though it doesn't stop me!)
shooter on the other hand chews every little piece of kibble.
it amazes me.

but yeah, this was a 9" spiraled one.
i used to buy the 4" ones but sumo could literally swallow that whole,
and did once when i tried to get it away from him when i realized what he was about to attempt.
so shooter still gets the small ones and sumo gets the large ones!
opposite of what you would normally assume.

p.s. i just watched your video on your page and that is exactly
what sumo and shooter are like when they play- noises and everything. i have to get a video because it is amazing how alike they are!

Toby can't have bones any more for that reason. I even tried Himalayan Mountain Chews but he would get a piece off that was way too big and try to swallow that too. I don't want the risk. Antlers worked okay but turns out my frenchie is allergic to venison. Please be careful! Too many close calls for me to keep going

That's scary. The thing that has me worried about Mikey is something similar. He will swallow the last 2 inches or so of his bully stick without chewing it into pieces and I am always checking in on him as he devours it. He chews it a bit to soften it up and then it's down the hatch. How that piece gets turned around just right to make it's exit a day or so later is beyond me. I'm afraid of it getting stuck in his lower intestines.
I always look to find the fattest bully sticks so he doesn't eat them so quickly and sometimes the ends of them are wide. If one end is wide and the other normal size, I'll dip the wide end into some wet dog food so he goes after the wide end first. That way he's not going to be swallowing 2 inches of a wide piece that really could get stuck.
I'm thinking I shouldn't let him have them anymore.
I know, I should take it away from him when it gets down that small, but that's a work in progress.

I haven't had a situation like yours though. I'm hoping to avoid it.

thanks, toby- i plan on trying antlers.
he just loves bully sticks so much and i trust them
because i know they will more than likely break down
and won't expand in his belly.
so if he is going to swallow something i'd rather
it be a bully stick than a toy or a rawhide, i guess.
RMB's are not easy to swallow, either and he is
satisfied tearing chunks off.
though those are a bit messier.

i have never heard of the himilayan dog chews
i just looked them up, very interesting.
how do those smell?

Bol, yeah, Stinky tends to gulp everything. Gypsy on the other hand, like shooter, has to chew every last bit of food thoroughly.
Stinky doesn't try to swallow the whole thing, but when it gets smaller, like around 2 inches, he will just swallow it. I take it away before he get a chance because Gypsy swallowed almost 3 inches of bullystick that she stole from Stinky and swallowed it before I could take it. She threw it up the next day and it looked exactly the same. So much for being digestible shrug

mikey, like i said to toby i'd rather it be something
as digestible as a bully stick than a rawhide or a toy.
i don't think there is really anything completely safe, though.

i've heard tricks like stuffing a kong with wet dog food (or wet kibble), sticking the bully stick in and freezing it.
that way the kong is attached to one end and easier to monitor the bully stick. they could probably pull it out eventually but eh,
worth a try?

stinky, ew that's gross! yeah, i do get scared when he swallows
pieces that are still completely intact.
but when he swallows the pieces he's softened, it doesn't
make me as nervous.
thankfully when he swallowed all 4inches, he was fine
and it digested...but not worth risking.
like i've said- i don't think there is anything
COMPLETELY safe. i should have been
monitoring more closely in this case.

I don't know, perhaps cutting it into bite sized pieces might be easier for him?
