Stinky
*insert fart- noise* |
| Barked: Sun Nov 8, '09 4:33pm PST | | | | | | OMD!!! Stinky does the same EXACT thing!
He will be chewing along, but never actually breaks pieces off and it just becomes this white gooey stringy mass of nastiness! Then he proceeds to try and swallow what he's made of it. I can't tell you how many times I've had to pull the things out of his throat. I stopped giving them for a while, and now I just buy the 6 inchers instead of the 12. He seems to be able to eat them a bit easier, I still watch him like a hawk though!
Maybe it has something to do with their frenchie-ness? I've asked so many people about this, and no one seems to have a similar problems, it's so weird that Sumo does. Nice to know I'm not alone!

Toby

| Barked: Sun Nov 8, '09 4:41pm PST | | | | | | Toby can't have bones any more for that reason. I even tried Himalayan Mountain Chews but he would get a piece off that was way too big and try to swallow that too. I don't want the risk. Antlers worked okay but turns out my frenchie is allergic to venison. Please be careful! Too many close calls for me to keep going | | | | |

Mikey

| Barked: Sun Nov 8, '09 4:43pm PST | | | | | | That's scary. The thing that has me worried about Mikey is something similar. He will swallow the last 2 inches or so of his bully stick without chewing it into pieces and I am always checking in on him as he devours it. He chews it a bit to soften it up and then it's down the hatch. How that piece gets turned around just right to make it's exit a day or so later is beyond me. I'm afraid of it getting stuck in his lower intestines.
I always look to find the fattest bully sticks so he doesn't eat them so quickly and sometimes the ends of them are wide. If one end is wide and the other normal size, I'll dip the wide end into some wet dog food so he goes after the wide end first. That way he's not going to be swallowing 2 inches of a wide piece that really could get stuck.
I'm thinking I shouldn't let him have them anymore.
I know, I should take it away from him when it gets down that small, but that's a work in progress.
I haven't had a situation like yours though. I'm hoping to avoid it.

Stinky
*insert fart- noise* |
| Barked: Sun Nov 8, '09 4:46pm PST | | | | | | Bol, yeah, Stinky tends to gulp everything. Gypsy on the other hand, like shooter, has to chew every last bit of food thoroughly.
Stinky doesn't try to swallow the whole thing, but when it gets smaller, like around 2 inches, he will just swallow it. I take it away before he get a chance because Gypsy swallowed almost 3 inches of bullystick that she stole from Stinky and swallowed it before I could take it. She threw it up the next day and it looked exactly the same. So much for being digestible

Mr. Kite- "Sumo"
being for the- benefit of mr.- kite. |
| Barked: Sun Nov 8, '09 4:49pm PST | | | | | | mikey, like i said to toby i'd rather it be something
as digestible as a bully stick than a rawhide or a toy.
i don't think there is really anything completely safe, though.
i've heard tricks like stuffing a kong with wet dog food (or wet kibble), sticking the bully stick in and freezing it.
that way the kong is attached to one end and easier to monitor the bully stick. they could probably pull it out eventually but eh,
worth a try? | | | | |

| Barked: Sun Nov 8, '09 4:52pm PST | | | | | | stinky, ew that's gross! yeah, i do get scared when he swallows
pieces that are still completely intact.
but when he swallows the pieces he's softened, it doesn't
make me as nervous.
thankfully when he swallowed all 4inches, he was fine
and it digested...but not worth risking.
like i've said- i don't think there is anything
COMPLETELY safe. i should have been
monitoring more closely in this case.
