My puppy was born 10/29/09 and he seemed to be doing fine at first when eating from his mommy but on Tuesday i picked him up and he had milk coming out of it's nose so I right away tool it to the vet and it had aspirated because he had the first stages of pneumonia so they put him on clavamox well he still has milk coming out of his nose so I called my vet and she said that it's lungs were clearing out well when I gave him his meds. a couple minutes latter s little bit of white stuff came out of his nose so I decided to (dont get too grossed out) put my finger to his nose and taste the white stuff and it was the medicine what could be going on? Im praying it is not his cleft pallet in the soft tissue we checked the other day for a cleft and my vet said he did'nt have one and I dont see one but I did read if he has a cleft pallet he will prob have to be euthanized and I cant that idea he is so precious, he eats great he has enery his temp is 98.7 he is gaining weight what could be wrong with my this wittle precious boy? Please help I dont want to loose him

I don't know what to say to help you. I would just keep checking with my vet. If his answers aren't satisfying you get a second opinion.

98.7 is a bit low for a puppy. Should normally be a bit higher- they normally run from 101-103. Make sure he is getting plenty of time to snuggle up with Mom, being cold can likely make the pneumonia worse. At about a week old, he can't regulate his body temperature yet. If you take him away from Mom for any amount of time, make sure you are keeping him warm. Just talk to your vet. Is he growing? It may become necessary to bottle feed if he's not getting correct feedings from Mom. Talk to your vet. Or do you have a breeding mentor? Someone who can help you out? Bottle feeding means every 2 hours for now... Stay in close contact with your vet. At a week old, they are all life threatening emergencies. hugwishes

edited to add: What form of Clavamox? Sometimes it can take a few days to kick in. Ask your vet when you should start to see improvement.

Milk coming out of his nose is not that uncommon, I have had that happen, especially with the Frenchie pups. As long as you watch for pneumonia, which you are, it should be okay. I agree that he should be a bit warmer... I keep a heating pad under the pups and a heat lamp over them for the first two weeks at least.
And, Clavamox is the antibiotic my vet uses for problems such as this. I also wipe the nose after each nursing. Good luck!

Thanks for clearing that up (about the milk out the nose), Hilda... I was thinking that, but I wasn't certain!

How are you doing today? Any improvement? Keep us posted! We're all thinking of the little guy!

Thanks for all of your concern im gonna call the vet again today and see if it has to possibly do asophagus I dont know maybe im over reacting but he does have aspiration pneumonia now and im really trying to clear it up, I dont know im just really stressed out about this I know he is suffering cuzof the pneumonia I just never had this happen to me with a puppy is it ok for milk to come out of his nose after every feeding? Even when I gave him meds it came out of his nose and im pretty careful about giving him a chance to swallow all of the med before giving him more. Well as for his lungs they sound a lil worse today how can the meds help him if he keeps inhaleing fluids? but he is still gainging weight and he seem to be pretty active for his age and for his problemsHes so little they cant operate if he had a cleff pallet or asophagus prob. has anyone else ever had this problem?

A cleft palate is visible when you look inside the mouth. It looks like an unzipped zipper running along the roof of the mouth.

You could also have the vet teach you how to do a tube feeding... in this the food is put directly into the stomach and would completely bypass the esophagus and lungs. It would give him a chance to heal.

Cleft palates can be surgically fixed by a vet surgeon. But often you have to wait until they are 5-6 months old. And when they are puppies is the most dangerous time for them. I agree with above poster that if you are comfortable with it you should ask the vet to show you how to tube feed which means passing a small tube into the puppies stomach to bypass the mouth. It can be dangerous if you accidently pass the tube into the lungs but is generally pretty easy to learn. It may help your little guy get passed this little hiccup in development.

You guys are right I will ask my vet about learning to tube feed but as for right now peanut is not doing so well he seems a bit lethargic he does not seem to be dehydrated and his temp is now at 99 degrees his lungs sound a lil better and I did manage to get some milk replacer down with a syringe and yes I was very gentle and I waited for a bit after each drop I put in his mouth but he was'nt being to responsivecry
