I'm working on- three toys! |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 4:25pm PST | | | | | | I've been dealing with a paw-licking dog, and one that seems to do a lot of night-time swallowing. For the night time thing, she suggested Prilosec for 2 weeks. I think it's supposed to heal the stomach, or at least sooth it, instead of simply reducing the acid as Pepcid does. It helped a little with the night-time wakeups, as did feeding Joe a little bit at bed time to keep something in his stomach during the long stretch between 6 pm and 8am.
I DID feel anxious about giving him Prilosec or Pepcid for extended periods of time, but after I googled, I found at least one vet site that said Pepcid could be used safely for indefinite periods of time. I wouldn't worry about giving it on a regular basis.
I've had a very, very hard time finding something for Joey to eat. He doesn't seem to handle kibble well, especially kibble with probiotics. so now I'm feeding canned grain-free food. Things aren't perfect, but they're better on the canned food. I like the canned because there are way fewer preservatives, but hate the cost.
From what I've read, some things like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome - different from inflamatory bowel disease) are rather symptom-less, and don't show up with a blood test, so you might get some help by going to a specialist. IBS is a curious thing, and the idea there is to feed low-fat, and sometimes low protein food. It's thought that anxiety irritates the gut, so that's to be avoided. You may want to read up on that and ask the vet if it's possible poor Mogwai has that. I know that at least one dog on here is an IBS dog - her owner gave me some info a while back.
I would keep whatever you feed simple, consistent, and not too oily/fatty. My dog doesn't do well when I switch foods, or combine foods.
Good luck. I know it's frustrating. I hope Mogwai feels better soon - and stays that way!

Kodi

| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 5:16pm PST | | | | | | I had the same problem with Kodi. Took a fecal into the vet and he has giardia. It's hard to diagnose cause you don't always find it in every stool sample. He is on Metrondalze(sp?)for a week. Then after a week of the meds I have to do another fecal. | | | | |

Mogwai
Grr! |
| Barked: Thu Nov 5, '09 7:04am PST | | | | | | Kangaroo? Venison? Good grief, I had never really thought that far out of the box.
Where do you get these foods? The problem with me is I live in Boston, and have no car. It is a huge struggle for me to get to the only pet store I know (it involves about three hours round-trip!). I was going to Petco because they have some good foods now, but it is a huge struggle to get there, too. And carrying all that food home on the train is brutal! Can you order these foods anywhere online?
The Zantac seems to be working. She had two doses yesterday, one in the am and one before bed. No vomiting, and she was very, very hungry and ate like a champ. I also gave her Kefir, I'm going to keep trying these things and in the mean time try and get some, gasp, kangaroo meat food?!?

It's also safe for a dog to be on pepcid (I'm assuming zantac as well since it's similar) for extended periods of time. So, if that works, I'd say roll with it. It's always good to find the root of the problem if you can though.

Mogwai, oh, yes, you would be surprised what is out there.
Addiction Foods, as someone already mentioned does have several foods that utilize "out of the ordinary" protein sources.
For example:
Venison:
Homestyle Venison & Cranberry Dinner (dehydrated raw)
Fig'licious Venison Feast (dehydrated raw)
New Zealand Forest Delicacies (Venison & Brushtail - dehydrated raw)
Viva La Venison (kibble)
NZ Venison & Apples (canned)
Other:
Perfect Summer Brushtail (dehydrated raw)
Wild Kangaroo & Apples (kibble)
NZ Brushtail & Vegetables (canned)
Unagi & Seaweed
** All of these can be ordered at K9Cuisine.com - orders $50 or more ship free.
Canine Caviar has a few canned foods that also might work:
Beaver (canned)
Venison Tripe (canned
They also have a canned duck product if you haven't tried duck.
PawNaturals.com carries these products but I've never used them or ordered from this site.
Evo has canned duck, rabbit, and venison. (K9Cuisine.com carries this line as well.)
Hope this helps! | | | | |

Mogwai
Grr! |
| Barked: Thu Nov 5, '09 11:57am PST | | | | | | Wow, thanks so much for listing all those foods. I have ordered Merrick from K9 Cuisine before, they give great customer service. I will look into those foods -- it is really hard for me to sort it all out, when I see different brands I don't know what they are unless I have done pre-research, so I really appreciate it.
When it says "dehydrated raw," does that mean you have to rehydrate and cook it? I know I sound dumb but I'm just confused. Do you feed it raw? I'm not quite brave enough to start raw.
It is kind of grossing me out to think of all those different meats! Mogwai eating kangaroo makes me freak out a little bit. And eating poor Bambi, and a poor little beaver who probably worked for years making a dam. But I guess if they're nutritionally sound, they're fine, right? Even if I do shed a tear when I put the poor kangaroo into the dish??!!
I am about to head home, crossing my fingers that she kept everything down today and we're on the upswing!
