Mogwai
Grr! |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 10:04am PST | | | | | | First, I want to thank you all for the great advice you always give me! Second, this is really long, but I really need help.
Mogwai has had a sensitive stomach for years. She was on Pedigree, but switched to really high quality foods after bouts of vomiting/diarrhea. Slowly but surely she got to the point where she couldn't handle commercially prepared foods at all.
The only vet treatment for her stomach she had in all this time was the occasional ER visit to control the diarrhea vomiting immediately. She has never had a major workup involving the stomach.
Anyway, we switched to home cooking full time in April, she did really well on it. Switched back to dog food in August, she got ill again. Switched back to home cooking, she did fine (sweet potatoes, chicken, salmon, eggs, and butternut squash).
Lately she has been waking me up in the night like she is going to have an emergency diarrhea episode, but she just runs outside to feverishly eat grass. No diarrhea.
After an episode like this, she won't eat in the AM.
The first time it happened, she didn't have the runs or vomiting, just grass eating, and I gave her Pepto. That night she ate fine, everything seemed fine, just a fluke.
She did it again a few days later, more Pepto, and I switched to a mixture of brown rice, chicken, black beans, and squash. She did great.
About a week later...same thing. Only this time she is vomiting small amounts many hours after she eats. Yesterday she ate grass in the morning, refused food. Ate at night, but then vomited at about 3:00 am.
She isn't acting funny, she's still active, going for walks.
I am really at my wit's end -- if the absolute blandest food is making her puke, what do I do?
And what could this possibly be? She really has zero other symptoms. She has low thyroid and is on thyroid meds, the Pepto really seems to help but I don't want to have to give it to her every single day forever.
She's drinking fine also. No stomach bloating, doesn't feel like she has a fever. No gas issues, just small amounts of vomiting. Also, she doesn't get into garbage or anything, it is impossible that she could have eaten something bad. She's too short to get in the trash cans (and they have lids), and I never leave anything out.
So first question -- what the heck is going on?
Second question -- what the heck can I do that I'm not already doing? I put her on Kefir when she has a flare up...should I try that first, a slew of probiotics?
Third question -- is it even worth a trip to the vet? She had full bloodwork within the last 6 months, nothing wrong with her insides. Is there anything the vet can tell me except, "I'm stumped, keep up with the Pepto?"
Thank you, from me and Mogwai!

Stinky
*insert fart- noise* |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 10:24am PST | | | | | | Hey Mogwai,
I'm sorry I don't have any advise, but I do have similar issues with Stinky. Though maybe not as bad?
I feel for ya and know what you are going through and how frusterating it can be not knowing what else you can do. If you want you can check out my thread about stinky throwing up, I've gotten excellent advice that might help you out!
I hope Mogwai gets back to normal soon!

| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 10:55am PST | | | | | | Have you tried an elimination diet? We had similar symptoms with our kitten and it turns out she cannot handle wet foods, chicken, or rice. Of course chicken and rice make up a ton of pet foods. She did well with raw, but then began to get constipated. She's doing great on a grain free salmon & pea food right now.
Also, I would go to the vet, this is not normal behavior at all. Ask about a bile test and other liver specific tests. Shunts and other things that can cause these types of symptoms often do not show up in routine bloodwork. You might have to think outside the box with your vet.
Good luck, I know all about the food rollercoater and how frustrating it can be.

Bailey
Poo is yummy!
|
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 11:07am PST | | | | | | This sounds like Bailey. Bailey has always had a sensitive stomach. She would alternate with doing fine and then the early morning grass eating, followed by not eating in the AM and then mucousy diarrhea and/or vomiting. She would then eat dinner and would be good for a few days.
Once Bailey had cancer it got really bad and the once a month episodes went to 3-4 times a week. I switched to Sojos with cooked meat and she did great.
I tried the elimination diet, switching foods, keeping the same foods, bland diets, etc and nothing really helped until I started her on 1/2 pepcid pill daily and homecooking. I am now able to feed her dog food again. If I skip a day of the pepcid she will refuse breakfast.
I am not saying to go ahead with the pepcid on your own. I would check with the vet first so you can get an accurate dose if that is something you are interested in trying. The vet said I could do a scope to see what is going on in the GI tract, but we haven't gone there yet. Otherwise the vet has no idea what is going on either. I believe that I read online that there can be side effects with pepcid if not dosed correctly, so PLEASE check with the vet first.
Good luck. It is so frustrating when you can't figure out what is going on!

Mogwai
Grr! |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 11:39am PST | | | | | | Actually, the vet does say to give her Pepcid or Zantac. I think I just have a mental block about those drugs, because I always associate them with human heartburn, and can't imagine how it would help. I have never really used them regularly, because my brain can't make the connection.
But every time she has had a more serious bout, the vet has always given a shot of Pepcid along with Pepto. Perhaps I should try that as well?
Has your dog been on Pepcid for a long time, with no effects? I am so glad you have found something that works. I am crossing my fingers that might work, I am going to start her today.
I have tried the elimination diet, that's how we ended up on the sweet potato/salmon thing. She got to the point where she couldn't even handle chicken and rice. I switched back to rice last week just because I thought maybe she couldn't handle the sweet potato/salmon anymore. She seemed to be fine on the rice, but little vomits again.
We have tried every single food you can imagine, on top of the home cooking. Started with crap foods like Pedigree/Alpo (when I was young and dumb!), moved on to Innova. She did fine on Innova but I can't find it here, and she probably wouldn't do well on it now. We went from Innova to Merrick, all wet, mixed with Blue Buffalo dry, Bil Jac dry, then eventually Pinnacle wet mixed with Pinnacle dry...Wellness, Halo, absolutely nothing agrees with her.
What in the world is left? I mean, chicken and rice, or salmon and sweet potatoes, are about the blandest, gentlest foods you can possibly find. I can't think of a commercial food that would be nicer on your tummy.
But if anyone has any commercial food suggestions that I haven't tried, please let me know. She REFUSES to eat dry unless wet is mixed in, by the way.

Meat ... it's- what's for- dinner!
|
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 12:29pm PST | | | | | | Honestly I have no idea what it could be, but it really doesn't sound like a food issue. I mean, it does, but with all the foods you have tried, including home-cooked bland foods, I have to believe there is something else going on here. I would suggest a full GI workup - maybe by a specialist?
I hope she feels better soon and that you will keep us updated!

| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 12:52pm PST | | | | | | Ditto on the work up. Might find out something basic you can work on although with older dogs it could be a combination of things.
Sassy has been on Pepcid for over a year now. 10 mg a day for a 44 pound dog. Vet prescribed it after she lost her appetite when on a strong antibiotic. She is a kidney dog and they do get acid stomach. I wouldn't put her on something like that without good reason either.

Cooper
Hangin' with Mr.- Cooper |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 1:03pm PST | | | | | | Hi there from one sensitive tummied dog to the next!! I threw up and had bloody diarhea on everything my mum gave me that was prepared commercially. Then, my mum tried raw, but made sure to avoid things that made me really sick, such as rice, fish and all types of poultry. I now only eat a raw diet consisting of beef or pork, one sardine per week, organs and rmb and to this day, I have never ever had a bout of illness!!! I took poor Coop to the vet so many times and wasted so much money! When I stuck to what I knew did not make Coop sick, I have ended all bouts of illnesses. If your dog did not do well on rice and chicken and you avoided it for a very long time and then put him back on it, you would not notice an onslaught of illness for a few days. That is probably why it seemed like your fur baby did ok on it at first. It does not always happen immediately, which is why these things can be so frustrating. All dogs eat grass, mine do it like crazy even though they are on a fairly balanced diet. Stick to soft meats like pork or beef and see what happens from there. Good luck!! | | | | |
