Back in February Missy had her ribs fractured. About a month or two after a large lump came up on the side of her rib cage towards the top of her spine. We took her back to the vets where it was thought to be a suspected Hematoma caused through the bruising of the ribs. If it got worse we was to bring her back for a biopsy. It eventually went down about 4 weeks after we found it.

Anyway since then this lump has occurred twice more in exactly the same spot and i'm just confused to be honest. Are hematomas likely to keep coming back? She's her usual self in regards to eating, drinking and exercise but she has changed in behaviour these past few months. I know i can feel something there but it's hard for others to feel thinking

She's off to the vets on Friday for a check up but can anyone shed any light on this?

I have heard of hematomas recurring, but I don't have any personal experience. Hopefully you can get some clear answers out of your vet. I firmly believe you know your dog best, so make sure you point it out, no matter how small it may seem. hug and hope you are all better soon!

It sounds to me like she may have a piece of bone loose there and it's trying to calcify? I had that happen to a piece of bone in my shin. It finally went away for good but it was well over a year.

hug It's hard when unexpected expenses come up. I hope your mom can help you out. You might also look for any rescues, humane societies... and see if they can help or at least recommend a vet who will take payments or will give you a discount.
I hope your dog is better soon, good luck.

Hi Missy... Maybe a vet visit is in order. My only experience with hematomas has been on the ear, but I learned that they DO recur - sometimes weeks later, sometimes months. My old GSD had so many, the last time he got one, the vet stitched a button (just a regular sweater button) to his ear to keep the blood vessel from swelling, allowing the wall of the weakened vessel to heal properly. That did the trick and he never had another. This has been some years back - there may be a device to serve the same purpose as the button now.
I'm not sure about other parts of the body, but a hematoma on the ear is uncomfortable to the dog and is easily ruptured because of head shaking and scratching. Medically, it was not a huge deal really, but my house looked like a crime scene when one of Bear's ruptured. shock However, I think ruptures are far more likely on areas where there is little or no fur and thinner skin, such as the ear.
I would imagine treatment (and recurrence) would depend on the location and size of the hematoma, (if that's what it is) among other things.

As Valentine mentioned, if it's a true hematoma they can be recurring. I really only have experience with ear hematomas though, and I've come across dogs that had to have them surgically removed several times.

I too have only heard of ear hematomas and any search i do only comes up with that. I do think she is ok but hopefully the vet visit will help answer my questions.

Just a quick update about Missy's vet visit today...

She had her nails trimmed, her anal glands emptied and the thing i thought was a lump is actually her rib...where it fused together again it's slightly out of place but is not a cause for concern way to go
