Maya had a couple seizures a year ago and she hasn't had any since but I did do A LOT of reading on the epilepsy sites and one thing that was reccommended was accupuncture. I took Maya for treatments for 6 mos after her seizures and so far she hasn't had another (we stopped accupuncture in May). She is not on medication either.

If you can find a holisitic vet in your area that specializes in accupuncture it maybe worth a try (instead of upping meds). The vet My went to for the needles said he had a few cases where they were able to wean the dog of seizure meds after a while. Other dogs were able to at least have their doses of meds reduced. (BTW the holisitic vet I went to is Board Certified in "traditional" vet medicine too so he really knew both sides of treating the seizures.)

Good Luck....I know I was a wreck when Maya had her seizures and I wouldn't leave her home alone for a couple weeks after.

Well our vet visit went really well. My vet, who like I said before is a family friend, basically said that Im being a paranoid mama and he is doing really good for being a seizure dog. He's not even having petit mal seizures and the partials are only happening once a month which is not bad at all. Once we get his levels back we will see what we're going to do with the does of the phenobarb, maybe raise it a little bit but not much. She's not that worried about how hyper he is, so valium is a kinda option right now, but not really unless something changes. So all in all a good vet visit, he's on track, Im trying not to worry... BOL!

I actually contacted a lady in my town who does holistic/aromatherapy stuff and is a reiki master, hopefully she will have some advice, information and maybe a class for me to take to help calm him down.

Thanks for the support pups, It really means alot!!!

Once a month? Do they coincide with application of Frontline or giving Heartgard or anything like that? Pokie has petit mal seizures and had gotten to clusters that were beginning to be too frequent. We went on phenobarbital 2 years ago. We started with a 1/2 tablet twice daily, then about 6 months later went to 1 tablet twice daily, and then about 6 months later to the current 1-1/2 tabs twice daily. He has had maybe 2 breakthru mini episodes over the past year, very mild by comparison. We protect his liver with daily Denosyl tablets, and so far, it seems to be working just fine. Our vet said anything more frequent than 6-8 weeks apart was too much, because each seizure episode 'rewires' the circuitry so to speak, and they become more difficult to control over time. Good luck to you and your boy!

I forgot to add Pokie that we talked about flea and heartworm meds. He was on Revolution before, but the application never coincided with the seizures, so thats not a trigger. But we switched him to comfortis and a separate heartworm med that I cant remember the name of right now. My vet said the same thing about wanting to try to get his seizures further apart, so we probably will adjust the meds a little bit after this next blood work comes in.

My trainer's dog has seizures and she had it down to very infrequently. When she started on Comfortis the dog started having seizures A LOT. You might want to reconsider your flea medication.
