We had a dog that we were fostering. A collie mix, but she was 15-20 lbs underweight and about 90% of her body had no hair and lots of scabs, she had flea allergy dermatitis and the poor thing had a UTI for 2 years before we got her!!!!

People would come over and just make gagging noises and be like "I can't look at her, I'm going to get sick!" They would tell us that we should put her in another room, or shoot her or put her down & it really pissed us off. We would just tell people to shut their mouths & leave if they didn't like it. In a few months she had gained plenty of weight and all of her hair came back! smile Of course then all people could say was "Wow, is this the same dog?!?!" or "She looks soo good!"

Beefing up her immune system is key for skin issues and allergies. Raw to me, is the way to go because it worked for my Sydney who was even on allergy shots from the doggie dermotlogist. I would also suggest a supplement that will help with the immune system. It is pet health opc and can be purchased at www.marketamerica.com/infinitysolutions and if you type OPC dog, it will come up. It has worked wonders for my fosters that have had issues from lyme's disease, allergies, to lupus. Good luck!

BTW: As far as your "friend" if they aren't supporting you and what is important to you, I'd show them the door. I came across a poem ages ago that I absolutely love and would like to share with you:

Just A Dog
From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog,"
or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog."

They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog."

Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog,"
but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog,"
and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand
phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust,
and pure unbridled joy.

"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.

Because of "just a dog", I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future,
the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away
from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog",
but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being
"just a man or woman."

So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog"
just smile...
because they "just don't understand."

Pi, have you been tested for the MDR1? If not, I highly suggest it; I've seen Ivermectin clear that stuff up rather quickly.

Washington State University is doing the tests for right at $70.

Thank you all again, sorry it took me so long to reply.. Been sorta busy.

I know I shoulda stood up for myself and my dog right then and there.. But I've always had a problem holding stuff in until I explode laugh out loud If she's ever here again, I'll probably just tell her to keep her opinions to herself or she can hit the road!

and thank you for all the suggestions on his health and links to sites! I will be looking into them shortly. And as for having him tested for the gene, I asked my vet about it and he keeps telling me "I'll have to find you someone who will do it" and to be honest, I don't know where to start looking! Ive called around to a couple other vets and they don't do it either...

The raw diet seems to be helping already truthfully.. His skin isn't as read, maybe from lack of chewing? (and he is on antibiotics for a skin infection).

thanks again everyone

I'd end a friendship for that, too! How ridiculous. I'm so sorry you had to listen to that. You're totally in the right here, and the only thing you need to change is to find better friends!

Pi #1.
Here is the website about MDR1 testing.

http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/

You don't even NEED your vet.
All you do is order a kit, stick a little brushlike thing in Pi's mouth to get some cheek cells, and send it back to WSU VCPL along with payment for the test.

Good gads, what is your vet thinking!!!???
He didn't even look into where to get testing done if he didn't know?
I'd heard vet knowledge on MDR1 was bad, but I didn't realize how bad.
Ok, rant off. I'm sorry if I upset anybody.

Ty for that link... When I can get some extra money I'll defiantly be sending out for one..

And I've been recently looking for a new vet as this whole year with Pi I feel he hasn't been giving me other options because he wants me to keep spending money. I told him about the tree tea baths and told me it wouldn't help (and it has) and that I should stick to those dips.. The dips I've been doing on and off for a year that hasn't helped.. The dips that cost me $60 a bottle.. Yeah... He also informs me that there is nothing wrong with his immune system, if that's the case.. how come he has the demodex? And when i ask him his reply is "it happens".

If anyone knows of a good vet in the Pasadena-Azusa area in CA let me know laugh out loud

ETA: And I feel a little stupid for not knowing vets didn't do the testing red face

Your vet was giving you the impression that vets did the testing. Don't get fussed about it. Honestly, I probably wouldn't know about a lot of things (including MDR1) except for my intensive support network of farmcollie Yahoo lists.

I am so glad Pi has someone in his life like you and not your friend.

Honestly, some people don't get it. And that's fine. But it's terrible when they act like YOU are doing something wrong by caring and giving a dog a shot at a happy, healthy life.

Keep on keepin' on, as they say. And think hard about whether that friend is really a friend or someone who makes themselves feel better by putting you down.

I'd give you a big hug for taking care of Pi like you are!

If Pi is on an antibiotic, I hope he is on a probiotic, too. He doesn't need a yeast infection in his open skin. Yikes! Acidophilus or multidophilus. Enzymatic Therapy's Pearls are at Wal Mart. I like Solaray from the natural food store.
