Pi

Belly Rubs- Please!

Barked: Tue Jun 30, '09 11:54am PST
I have no idea where to put this, so feel free to move it mod.

Since we've gotten Pi, we've fought with Demodex mange (as some of you may know). We've done a lot.. dips, shampoos, ointments, pills.. everything but the shot, its a last end resort and I pray I won't have too. Recently, he's gotten better on Tea Tree Shampoo and immune boasters.. And today he started a raw diet. Well, during this process, he lost a lot of hair, had to be shaved down, got sores on his body and lost a lot of weight.

Well, today a "friend" was over and saw him and the first word out of her mouth was "wow put that dog down!" I wanted to cry. Pi has these issues, but i'm not ready to give up... He's not suffering (though a little itchy) he's happy as can be. When I told her that would be a last resort and he would have to be suffering for me to do she replied with "Well, you didn't pay for him and your doing all of this for a dog you should of never got"! I wanted to scream! No I did not pay for him, but emotionally I have and I have paid in vet bills.. I paid 100's in vet bills, I put my blood sweat and tears into him.. Daily baths, special diets.. And to just say "put him down!". I tried to change the subject but she kept going on and on about how I was being "stupid" for paying so much for a dog that was given to me (what sense does that even make?) and stupid for putting so much money into him when "he'll probably just die anyways" I tried to explain that he looks worse then he actually is.. but she went on and on about how she would never do it.. at one point i swear she was trying to tell me she'd put him down just because he looks ugly. I really hope that isn't what she was saying...

I just really needed to vent on his.. It's hard when me and my husband put so much into him and love him so dearly... and people (she isn't the first) can tell me to just "put him down". Through all of this he has high spirits, he's playful and happy.. How could anyone tell me to just "put him down".. and for something and stupid as money or how he looks?

It's been a rough day.

PS: He's started raw... Keep paws crossed that helps him even more!

hi Pi! My friend has a Basset Hound who fought with the same thing when he was a little puppy. It took a few months, but now he is completely normal! He did the bathes and medications necessary, and I do not believe they ever got the shot. All of his hair grew back and he no longer itches. Hang in there, and don't let people get you down by makeing such negative and uneducated comments. You know your dog, and you love your dog... no one else can make decisions for you.

That's unbelievable. I'd tell your "friend" that what she said was hurtful. I'd have told her to "shut the **** up already". Those comments were hurtful, completely uncalled for and just plain rude. 'ems fightin' words. I'd burn bridges for comments like that.

It doesn't matter what you pay to get a dog, its your responsibility and its your decision how to treat it.

I didn't pay a dime for Des, but the bills started rolling in the day we found her. They just started up again, but you know? I wouldn't change a thing. Best dog I've ever had. She is my baby girl and my best friend and I don't care what anyone says. I'll do what I have to make her have a better life. When she has a better life, I have a better life because she's in it with me.

Some people just don't get that same bond that we do and to be honest I feel badly for them. Dogs are the only ones that love 100%, that are always our personal cheerleaders when we get home, that no matter what we do - they just love and only want to be loved. If someone can't make that connection or see the joy/importance in that, then it is truly unfortunate for them.

When I first brought Trixie home and she was so sick, many people people told me to "give her back".

These people are not dog people. They have no idea what it is to love an animal. Ignore them. My dog is like my child - imagine if you told your friend what to do with her own child?

It can be really hurtful, but do try not to take it to heart. You're a good dogmom (or dad) and you're doing what's best for Pi so good for you! cheer

Ten years ago we opened our kennel. We started grooming a Westie who had the most terrible skin I ever saw. I kept screaming Demodex, they took him here and there and everywhere, treated him for this and that and the other and no one said demodex. After more than a year of this poor dog being raw and almost bleeding we got a new veterinaryskin specialist in the area. They took him, she said demodex and treated him with the ivermectin and LESS THAN ONE MONTH LATER I groomed him and he had hair growing everywhere and no open sores. I groomed him today... 10 years later... he is now a bit plump but has the best skin and hair on any westie I ever groomed!!! Hang in there!

Chaz-

Are you aware there is an issue with using ivermectin with many of the collie family breeds? If Pi has not been tested for the MDR1 mutation, an ivermectin shot could potentially be fatal for him.

(Well, if you are aware of it, I'm sure there is somebody out there who isn't.)

Pi- Wishing you the best of luck, both with Pi's problem and with finding better friends.

It would be interesting to know this persons stance on the elderly and people with physical and mental challengesthinking . If your dog is not in constant pain and other than the skin issues is healthy and happy why in the world would anyone put him down? And honestly what does the fact that you didnt pay for him have to do with anything? I know its hard but try not to pay any attention to this persons opinions about this matter, hold your head high, know you are doing whats right for you and most of all.... enjoy your dog!

ETA I hope you can find an answer to his health problems for his sakesmile

I know how that feels. =/ My grandmother says that every time a health problem she is not used to dealing with comes up. My cat got a UTI. "Oh, you should just put her down." She got obese. "Oh, you should just put her down."
Cookie got incontinence. "Oh, you should just out her down." Her medicine ran out and she was leaking all over the house again over a year later. "You should just put her down."
