Anyone else on Comfortis?

This forum is for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog.

We buried our beloved Macy today - our 5-month old blue-nose APBT whom was given her first dose of Comfortis only three days prior to her death today. I previously had another dog of mine, a 2yr old APBT named Vada, on Comfortis as well, and it had worked wonders for the flea infestation. I was aware of the common vomiting after given the pill, as I had seen in Vada, which usually only lasted 6-8 hours of "upset tummy"; I was not aware there could be an adverse reaction, causing death, for poor Macy. Macy's past three days: Day one - vomiting, no appetite.. Day two - continous vomiting, diarrhea, no appetite but extreme thirst, lethargy.. Day three - violent vomiting, diarrhea, still hadn't eaten, lethargy, excessive thirst and drooling, dilated pupils, trembling, death.. The Comfortis was the only change in her life.. I've seen a lot of people post in the defense of Comfortis, such as "there are some people have bad reactions to penicillin, but that doesn't mean it won't work well for someone else who needs an antibiotic," I used to swear by comfortis! And for some - I will agree - it does work well, as it had with my dog Vada. But if I had known beforehand, that so many other dogs had such negative reactions, and death, occuring after a dosage of comfortis - I would have never taken that chance with Macy's life, or Vada's for that matter. If your pet means anything to you, it's too much to risk; better safe than sorry! Don't take the chance! It's sad to watch any man, have to bury his best friend; and now we need to find the words, to tell our kids, why Macy will no longer be curled up next to them beside the couch..

Um, maybe I misread that...your dog Vada had been vomiting but you continued to give it to her, and then also gave it to your new pup Macy? Vomiting is a big red flag, not something to be accepted as normal since it is 'a common side effect'. I am sorry for your loss though.

Comfortus is the best flea medication I have ever used. Vomiting is a side effect, but if you have it just cut the pill in half and do half in the am and half in the pm.

I am sure there are some dogs allergic, but there are some people who are allergic to strawberries too. Also passing away a few days after taking the pill doesn't mean the pill caused the dog to pass away, it may have been involved but the dog may have passed comfortus or not.

It is an expensive pill, but no when you realize how well it removes fleas and it lasts a full 30 days.
