Hi Maddy. So sorry about your problems; but it sounds like you have caught it in time to really learn to manage it. If you have not had an ultrasound, I would highly recommend it. It told us a lot more about Oliver's heart; and I wish I had done it sooner. Also, Oliver LOVED jerkey treats, and I hated to take them away from him--so I started making my own jerky. Some people get a dehydrator and do it (without using salt) and I actually just did it at a low temp in my oven with chicken. It wasn't just like jerky, but Oliver did like it. Best of luck Maddy and Mom.

Good idea Oliver! I've been trying to find the sodium levels of bully sticks and beef tendons since those are chewy staples in the house. No luck yet though. I know one thing - I'm NOT drying those things for Maddy! silenced

Don't know if I mentioned this, but my dogs' favorite treats of all are apple slices. They're low in sodium and good for digestive health as well. As for chewies, I really don't know. My dogs get enzyme-coated rawhide chews for their teeth, and as far as I know they don't have a lot of sodium in them. Sorry about the jerky though! That's what makes it so appealing I guess...the yummy salty goodness. shrug

Do you dehydrate the apple slices?

I can't imagine there is a lot of salt/sodium in the natural chews. The packaging always says the ingredients are 100% steer pizzle or whatever nasty little thing they're chewing on that day. Thank dog! I'd have a serious revolt in the house if I took those away too.

So far so good on the meds. No major digestive issues!

I don't dehydrate the apple slices, but I thought of you today when I was shopping for treats. I found something from a company called Veggie Life that looked ok, and my dogs like them. They're dried sweet potato strips that have no added salt, so they're low in sodium and very chewy. I bought them for Lucy. way to go

Maddy, it is such a shame you have to go through this, but you are a strong girl and will surely battle it out. I will make sure to keep an eye out for low-sodium treats/food on my trips to the pet stores. I had never heard of this health issue, and will consult my vet on my next visit to make sure everything is ok with me. Please keep us all updated.

xoxo

I just found out my Dixie has congestive heart failure a month ago. They told us a while back she had a heart murmur but it wasn't bad enough to medicate yet. I can't say exactly what to expect becuase I haven't been dealing with it too long, but I can say to be happy that it was caught at an early stage and your dog is getting the medicine she needs. My dog is much too far along now and isn't doing so well, and she will probably pass soon. I wish we would have found out how serious her heart condition was sooner.

I wish you both the best of luck, and I hope your dog lives a long happy life =]

Lucy - thanks for the tip! We actually dehydrated our own sweet potato slices once. They loved them!

Poor Dixie - have they started you on any medication? You might want to join the yahoo group Scooby Doo posted a few pages back.
