| Barked: Mon Jul 28, '08 6:25pm PST | | | | | | Thanks Lucy! Based on all that information, it sounds like a moderate protein, low sodium diet would be best to support proper organ function. The extra moisture in canned or re-hydrated food like The Honest Kitchen would probably help too! I compared a few foods, here's what I found out:
- Nature's Logic is .33% sodium (38% protein, 18% fat)
- Orijen Senior is .30% (42% protein, 14% fat)
- Orijen Adult has .25% sodium (42% protein, 16% fat)
- Honest Kitchen Force (chicken) is .20 - .24% sodium (21% protein, 14% fat)
- Honest Kitchen Verve (beef) is .14% - .16% sodium (21% protein, 7.5% fat)
We usually rotate between Nature's Logic and Orijen Senior, but I don't think that's the best diet for us anymore. If my theory's right, it looks like one of the Honest Kitchen recipes would be a better choice. I'm not sure of any canned foods yet, still researching!

| Barked: Mon Jul 28, '08 6:35pm PST | | | | | | Hi there,
I have had 5 dogs with heart disease. There is no cure there is only management of symptoms. What helped me alot was joining the caninecongestiveheartfailure group on yahoo. What to expect is a slow progression of the disease in which you will shuffle medications to control symptoms. Please feel free to email me at sweetnikita@aol.com so I can speak with you privately. there is hope for a long and good life.

| Barked: Mon Jul 28, '08 9:42pm PST | | | | | | Oh Maddy, we are so sorry that you and your mom are having to deal with this health issue. Mom know very little about it except that she lost her very first dog to congestive heart failure due to a vet's ignorance. She had to take her to a out of town vet who had never seen her before who diagnosed her with bladder stones. He put her on a hight salt diet saying it would break up the stones so she could pass them. What it did was kill her. She had a hear murmer since being a pup and mom had forgotten about it. This vet never listened to her heart close enough to hear it. At her age, the salt made her retain fluid and her heart just gave out. From the time she started showing symptoms until she passed it was about 36 hours. Mom had just thought she had caught a cold, it was on the weekend and mom would have taken her in on Monday. It became an critical situation so fast and mom could not get her to an emergency clinic quick enough. All that is to say that mom learned how important a low salt diet is when there are any problems with the heart. It sounds like you have recieved some very good advice. You will be in our thoughts and prayers as you are learning how to live a little differently in order to continue to have a full and happy life.
We love you Maddie,

My heart has a little problem due to heart worms. I can't run or doing other exercise, only walk - slowly walk - about 1 hour daily. If I walk too fast, mom will hold me and walk for a while to let my breath back to smooth and let me walk again. Mom won't let me play with other dogs, that will cause me cough very serious.
Mom also cook for me without any salt or other flavor, but mom will give me pudding and some fruits. I love that!...
It's been more than 4 years and I am fine...
Wishing Maddy will be fine...
Vic woofs and hugs

| Barked: Tue Jul 29, '08 9:18am PST | | | | | | dingo was diagnosed with a heart murmur about 6 months ago. He was between a grade 3-4 but closer to 4. Our vet told us we catched it before he went into heart failure. Dingo takes endecard (sorry not really sure how to spell it) daily. He's been doing well on it. our vet told us with him on meds he should be fine. His dog has been on it for 4 years and is doing great. We go back for a re-fill and check up on thursday so i'll let you know. Best of luck and just be thankful you caught it in time. Maddy is going to be just fine. We tell Dingo his heart is enlarged because he has so much love to give! | | | | |

| Barked: Tue Jul 29, '08 11:04am PST | | | | | | Thanks Dingo! I love your attitude.
I talked to the vet today again. She said without an ultrasound it's hard to say exactly what it is, but most likely it is mitral valve regurgitation. She also said that .33% in a diet was actually pretty low already and it should be perfectly fine since it's a high quality food. The big thing is low sodium treats. No more jerky treats! I told her Maddy is really not going to like her now. I'm still going to add more wet foods though to help those little kidneys out.
Anyone know what the sodium levels are in chew treats? Pig ears, Lamb ears, Bully Sticks, etc. I imagine the pig ears would be high since I've always heard pork is higher, but not sure on beef or lamb products...
