First off, I'm not saying the CKCS is stupid..it was the owner...bol.
I was walking my dogs today and stopped to talk to a lady on the street with a lovely little cavalier boy. We chatted for a few minutes and then another lady joined us. This woman said she had a CKCS puppy, 6 months old. We asked her where she got her and she said "off the internet, I didn't even need to go to the breeder, they dropped her off to me". Uh oh. The nice cav lady and I exchanged glances....

Next thing ya know this new lady says she plans on breeding her! Immediately the other woman and I started peppering her with questions about research about heart problems and syringomyelia.

She had no clue.

Turns out the nice cav lady's dog has syringeomyelia and started telling the other woman about it and how hard it is to deal with and that it can only be diagnosed with an MRI and that any breeding dogs need to be checked etc etc.

So, she and I are trying our best to dissuade/educate this woman and suddenly she says " What if I breed her to another breed instead?".....I asked her why she wanted so badly to breed her dog. Turns out she wants her daughter to experience the miracle of birth...OMG she was a walking stereotype of the ultimate stupid dog owner!

I told her there were plenty of videos out there she could show her kid. My mum drew pictures for goshsakes.

I then talked about the lack of homes out there for dogs and how many get euthed each year because they have not enough people to adopt them. No change...she says she "knows" she could find homes for any puppies in her neighbourhood.

Sigh...I finally tried the money angle, cost of possible C sections, health issues with puppies..etc...no change...finally the nice Cav lady and I just shrugged our shoulders, turned and left her standing there like the idiot she is.......

Sometimes even education and information is not enough. She shouldn't have reproduced herself! YIKES.

a bit harsh Cracker dog but I totally know how you feel. You gave her plenty of new info to think about, maybe she'll dwell on it a bit, and come to some new conclusions. At least you planted the seed, and were polite enough that hopefully she will not automatically chuck everything you told her out the window.

Hello Cracker my friend, all i can say is her daughter will experience the miracle of birth when she has her own kids!!!!! Having your pet give birth just to make an educational point to a child is..... i can't even think of the right word, unthinkable!!!! She should be educating her daughter that too many unwanted pups are born because of her attitude. Take her to a farm and let her see pigs, sheep or a calf being born please.!!!! I hope you educated this woman enough to think a bit more about the miracle of birth. dog

Thanks for trying Cracker . . . sigh

The good thing is, most people who think like this only have a single litter . . . and then when they realize how overwhelming the responsibility is they spay/neuter. I wish everyone could learn from being told, but then I worked for years with oppositional defiant disordered teenagers - which also pretty much sums up my personality - so I do understand those who hate being instructed.

On that note, given time to think on what you and the other lady said, this woman might change her mind (she just wouldn't admit it right away.)

Cracker, I don't think you were harsh. One of the smartest things I ever heard was from a teacher in high school... (yes, it was a while ago! wink - but it has stuck with me). She said, you need a license to drive, to own a business, and to do just about anything except the most important thing you'll ever do in your life, to have a child. (yes, this was leading up to the point where we got issued our "baby's" - eggs- and had to carry them everywhere we went for a week. That experience is probably the reason I don't have kids... winklaugh out loudwink

oh, and back on topic, I also think you should need a license (whatever you want to call it from the AKC) to breed your dogs... I think if breeders were limited to the amt of dogs that could be registered, it would significantly cut down on puppy mills. All it would take is limiting each dam to one litter a year (which is still too much). Takes at least some of the profit out of it... Granted, nothing is a perfect solution...

The " harsh" comment was not in referrence to how Cracker spoke TO the woman, it was regarding a few of the comments About the woman. I'm sure cracker was respectful to her in person- just trying to educate another before they did something silly naughty

Yes, the comment was harsh, and it was meant to be a sarcastic, roll of the eyes comment. Like a joke about continuing the gene pool of "stupid" people...kind of along the lines of my fave "Humans! Sigh, that's why I work with dogs!"

poor cracker...just hope and pray she thinks about it...

max- this is in no way saying you're wrong or anything like that i promise!! just my observations...banning things is just asking people to do it!!! think about it...for example, smoking (not cigaraettes) is illegal in the US, and how many hundreds of people are caught everyday doing it? and arrested and all? but in the Netherlands where its legal, hardly anyone smokes...its not a novelty, or illegal, so its not something that people think is "cool" to do...same with alcohol, young people start drinking at a young age cause its cool to do since its illegal, if it wasnt illegal there would be SO much less underage drinking because it wouldnt be so cool anymore...

brb..minor disaster here at work...
