Woof Woof! This forum is a service for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitue for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog.
Where we go to the vet, we never see the same doctor twice. Which bothers me a little actually a lot. We have one there we really like, and one well Zack would just soon pee on and I don't like that one either. But we figure we are relocating so by the time it's time for annual shots we will be in another state, so no sense worrying about it. But I don't like the doctor Merry-go-round.
Dr. George saved my life, I trust and love him and all of his staff very much. They truely care and love what they do. They are our hero! Don't give-up, keep searching until you find someone with this same pation, you deserve it!
Love
Lilo
Zack, that was one of the problems I had with my vet service. Vet merry-go-round, with a few of the vets having poor communication/interpersonal skills.
You could ask just to see the one vet that you like. This becomes a problem on occassion if you don't schedule the appointments enough in advance, but otherwise, they should be able to accommodate your request.
Sunny, I would be very upset for my dog to examined without me. You know your pet better than anyone. Even if that weren't true, the dog can't talk to answer any questions the Dr has. The care of a child or pet has to be a cooperative effort between the owner, the Dr and his or her staff.
When Sashie needed X rays last July, the Dr even let me go into the X ray room with her to soothe her while she was set up and between pictures. We knew Sasha was in pain and having me with her was easier for her. Sasha loved her Dr and her vet techs, so it wasn't that she was afraid or anything.
His prices have been rising, as has everything else in the world, but my furgirls are getting quality care. I could not settle for less and neither should any of you other dog lovers. Lily's Dr (same person) also respects the fact that my funds are limited and tries to do things as reasonably as he can within his parameters of being a well trained Dr from the ever so prestigious University of Michigan. He also offers one free exam to any dog from the shelters in 2 counties. They even shaved Lily's tummy to see if she had a spay scar as part of the free exam.
OP, I'm glad you have found a new place that looks promising.
Talk to the vet you like about the issues you are having. If that goes well stay and just do what you have to do to work past the office staff. If they vet doesn't give you the response you need to make you comfortable continuing to go there, make plans to go elsewhere. Ask around and see if your friends, neighbors, coworkers like their vets and give them a try.
First off, veterinarians are providing a service to you, and you are being charged for that service. I'm very sorry for your experience Delilah. We had a very good vet. Unfortunately, we were not treated well by the front desk, and have since switched to a new veterinarian. My old vets too never told me to bring samples, but always asked for them when I got there. It too annoyed me. Again, I am sorry for the problems you are having.
I'm probably a little more than annoyed with mine as of late....
Tamlyn went in for a teeth cleaning and came out with a rather sore mouth. He wouldn't let us touch it for a while, so we let it be. Since I'd had my teeth recently deep-cleaned and had been sore for a little while after, we figured that's all it was. When I was finally able to have a look at his teeth, one of the canines was chipped!
Long story short, we brought it to his attention. When we went in to have him look at it (at his request), he proceeded to not only start yelling and telling us it couldn't have happened there, but he also grabbed Tamlyn's mouth and held it open. He said, "See? It doesn't hurt." Nevermind that Tamlyn was squirming and moaning. We told him to get his hands off at once and, after making sure he had no intention of doing anything to correct the problem, took Tamlyn and left. It was only after we made it known that we were taking our business elsewhere that he decided to try and "play nice".
Still, it was horrible because we'd been pleased with him otherwise. The quality of service at the office had been declining a bit for a little while. But we stayed on because we liked him.
We talked with our vet (the one we usually see and like) and I have decided we're parting. I still like him it's just the other things that I've taken issue with. He did though refund our 23 dollars we were charged for a nail trim. He said that was outrageous and had no idea it was happening. So we're happy with how things are.
Gracie was on a prescription antibiotic and pain reliever after getting her foot caught in a bear trap last year. I asked our vet to give us a prescription so that I could go online and buy the medication cheaper. But, he refused, telling me I could buy it at the office. I explained to the vet why I wanted to script. The vet told me they would match the price if I bought it through them. Somehow, I think this might have been illegal. After this, we switched vets.
I just wanted to clarify my post, I would pay any amount of money my vet required. It's just nice knowing that my dog is more important than my wallet. If Neesa needed ANYTHING (surgery etc) it would be provided for her in a heartbeat. I just love having a vet who I can work with and doesn't treat me like a dollar figure. I would gladly pay for the peace of mind that my vet treats each and every animal that comes through the doors as their own. I really lucked out in finding that in my vet and would be devestated if she stopped practising.
