Little annoyed with my vet as of late...

We've been going to them for the last three and a half years I would say. We have five dogs so (one has had quite a few medical issues) they know us quite well (or so I thought). We usually see the same doctor and we really like him. As of late though they've been letting me down. Recently we had to take two in for their Bordetella. They usually don't get this, but they'll be at the pet hotel in July so we needed it. When we got there we were told we should have brought in a stool sample. I told them I would have gladly but we were never told to. At the same appointment they asked if I wanted them to cut my doxies nails. I said sure. We go to pay and they charged me 23.00 for a nail cut. It was a different doctor then we usually see but still I was a little taken back. Then even more recently I brought our puppy in, because I had some concerns with how often he was urinating. When I called and made the appt. I asked if I needed to bring anything they said no it will be a consult to see what to do next. I go to the appt. I check in and they ask do you have urine sample or did you stop you dog from peeing. I said no, I wasn't told to. They were very annoyed and sent me in. Needless to say nothing of the visit shed any light. They said how great he looks, then chastised me for feeding him what I do. I believe she called it feeding one of those health food store fad foods. He's also not fixed yet (he's only four and half months) she asked if I was going to breed him, and I said no. All my dogs are fixed and he will be also I just want to give him enough time to grow. I already had an appt. for next month if she had checked. I was told to then bring back a urine sample and charged 56.00. For what I don't know. Sorry to go on and on, but after what has happened I was annoyed, especially since I'm there so frequently. I've started looking at other vets since I do need to get the little one fixed in the near future, and I'm finding that for the past years we've been paying some high prices. Just wanted to vent, sorry and thanks for listening.
Veterinary care is a service. If they aren't providing you with good service, you should feel no guilt in shopping around for a vet who works harder to meet your needs. Especially if you are paying more than is customary!
Hi there...I can understand your frustrations. We had that experience once before. There were 2 or 3 doctors at the same office and we had been going there for a few years. WE loved Dr. James . She took good care of us.
Well, we noticed staff was changing and one day when I had an emergency, one of the staff people on the phone said they wouldn't be able to fit me in and mom would either have to take me to an ER vet or they could refer me. What the heck is that?! Mom asked to speak to Dr. James and Dr. James told us to come in.
We had a conversation with her and told her how unhappy we were with her staff and other vets there. There's other stuff I could tell you too. Anyway, we had to make a decision...stay there or leave. We decided as long as Dr. James was there, we would stay and anything that was charged, mom checked very carefully or went through Dr. James.
Once Dr. James left the practice, it was a no brainer for us. We found another vet.
If there's a vet you have been seeing that you feel really comfortable with, I would try to work it out. Perhaps speak directly with them. Bets are they will be very understanding. If the vet has left, I guess now is a good time to decide your next move.
Good luck. I totally get where you are coming from
Lucky for us we have finally found the right vet for us!
Before that though we had a neat vet, but the staff was terrible and would treat me like I was a dumb person who didn't know how to take care of her pets, so we left. The one we have now is so nice!! His name is Dr. Murchant and we have been with him for about 2 years. He doesn't push his Science Diet at us once he heard that we were on Solid Gold, and he always explains whats happening (if somthing is wrong) in turms that I understand intead of talking in turms that only vets understand and then thinking I'm stupid for asking what skldfjosioej means!!
We left our old practice even though we really liked our vet. When we had a health emergency and our vet wasn't in we saw one of his partners who did not take us seriously and when we called back in a panic later that day we were told she was leaving for the day and call in the morning. We went to the Emergency clinic to learn that Gabe may not make it through the night (he did thankfully) but "call back in the morning?" Don't wait for a crisis to find a new vet if you are not happy, or talk to you vet about your concerns and see if something can be helped. In our case, I was so irritated we simply found new vet more in line with our thoughts on nutrition, vaccinations, and better safe than sorry!
Hope things go well with your pup's spay and that you figure out a happy solution to this!
Maybe you need a new vet now. Is there an Integrity Animal Hospital in you area? We use that vet office, and I think that they are about as good as it gets. I just don't like the dog foods that they recommend.
I hate so much when they don't tell you what you need to bring in, then they look at you like you're stupid.
I would definitely start shopping for another vet. We have switched vets from where we started with Abby, because they just were not very nice or informative. We actually take her to a Banfield Hospital at our PetSmart and we love it there. The vets and the vet techs are so nice and will talk with you forever about anything you have questions about. Plus they don't push any foods on us or even make us buy their brands of meds. It's all up to us and they work with us with everything!
You have every right to be 100% happy with your vet. If you don't like going, you pup sure as heck won't like it either!
Yes, we have started the search to see what else we can find. I did bring a urine sample back there today to have it looked at. Turns out he does have some sort of an infection. They said he had some WBC and crystals in his urine. (didn't say what kind) We picked up the antibiotics (who knows if they were over priced ) and we'll just keep looking. Thanks for listening. I was just a little peeved this morning.
Scooter I did a similar thing with my last vet... I saw a few vets I really liked at this office, but they kept leaving! The service was getting worse and worse and the prices were going way up. We had a bunch of small problems with them which added up... My family was going to this vet for over 20 years and it was very close and convenient as well so I hated to leave. Finally when I went to make an appointment with the most recent vet I really liked there and was told she no longer worked there, I decided it was time to move on. I was tired of having to see a new vet almost every visit, who didn't even know my dogs.
We found out she left because the office was bought by VCA and she didn't want to work for a corporation like them. I was able to find out where that vet had gone, so we followed her! We have now followed her through 3 moves because the clinic where she was working after she left that first one ended up changing locations so we went to their new location. Then they had a big issue with one of the other people working there (basically this person was neglecting her pets and the office didn't seem to care) so she ended up leaving that clinic as did several other employees. Now she is actually working in the same building where the clinic was before it moved, but it has a different name and staff. I really love the receptionists and vet techs there, they are awesome! I don't like the other vet who works there much because he has a totally different perspective and ideas than my vet (but that's ok because I don't take my dogs to him.) So now I am very happy, and I have a vet who knows me and my pets really well and usually knows what I want...
We'll be moving again in a year or so though because our vet is opening up her own practice which will be closer to us than her current location.
Sorry you are going through all of this with your vet. Maybe you could talk to your normal vet and try to get things settled. I always try to find a small veterinary clinic with only one vet (there's usually a second vet, but that doc is there like one day a week). That way we always see the same one and get the same treatment. A lot of times veterinarians will do small things (nail trimming, ear cleaning, etc) for free once they develop a relationship with owner and pet. Good luck!
