Heartgard and seizures?

This forum is for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog.

i dont use anything on my dogs for fleas, instead they get monthly bath in a flea shampoo au naturale.
they are checked constantly becouse i can spot a flea instantly, and i dont like the idea of chemicals on them, we dont have carpeting in the house, wich, fleas spend 80% of their time in carpeting.
the rest of time is spent on host.
I also use ivermectin from fleet farm, only under vets care, becouse i cant afford to treat six dogs with heartgaurd.
save tonns of $ alone on that fact.
i only use it in a bad misquito season.
this year it was dry as a bone, we had drought, and it was hot, barely any misquito, so i feel we are safe, in working at the vet many years the instance of heartworm was very low, we rarely saw or treated a dog for it.
we are in the north though so we can get away with it.
seizures can be kicked off by anything, it very well could be the frontline, or the heartgaurd as stated above.

I have Vizsla's. Five of them. I have never had this problem before, and wanted some feedback. One of my girls had a small seizure after three to four days of giving heartguard plus, that was in September 2011. Didn't give any Heart guard at all till Feburary 12 2012. Guess who had a seizsure 4 days later????? THIS IS VERY CONCERNING!! I have heard about collies shepards, herding type dogs getting this reaction. I would imagine it is more common than we are all told. My vet said in September it was very rare, wait and see. Well I've had enough. To see her so stressed out, and I can't stand to see her like this. All my other dogs don't have a reaction[yet] at all.Any other Vizsla's with this reaction?????

I'm sorry you aren't well, it may be the flea preventative, the heartworm,or a coincidence. It may be that the seizure would have occurred even if you didn't give them medications. Don't always assume that if one thing happens after another, that the first caused the second. Often there can be an unrelated cause just chance.

I had a schipperke who had a seizure within 24 hours every time he had ivermectin in ANY form.
HOWEVER... he also had some other triggers which I never found as he would seize about one or twice a month, even without ivermectin.
He did have a family history of seizures as well.
