There is a clinic by my house open on Sundays and my mom is taking me today to get me checked out. I was up howling from 2AM to 5AM last night. My mom says now that the weekend is over she can no longer adhere to my schedule of sleeping all day and being up all night. My mom slept yesterday from noon until 4PM and today from 10AM - 2 PM, which she says will absolutely not work during the week, since she gets up at 6:30AM to go to work.

I seem to rest fine during the day and then I howl all night. My mom lays on the floor with me and everything. She has been shutting the cats out and one of them pooped on the floor yesterday, she thinks they are mad at her.

Oh, Tonka...I thought you were no longer howling since the patch was removed. I hope you are not in too much pain. Glad Mommy is taking you to see someone today...I know he is not your regular vet; but he may have some new answers, hopefully. Let us know how you are.

I had the same problem after my bilateral hip surgery. I cried and wimpered ALL night long. My mom camped out on the living room floor with me for weeks. I had to have two fentanol patches...about 7 days worth. We did not sleep a darn. I even cried in my sleep. The vet even gave me some extra pain meds cus I cried so much he was worried that it could possibly be pain. He did say, however that it was most likely 'morphine dreams'. Sure enough when the patches were done - my crying stopped. So I think it was a side effect. This all happened when I was a puppy and although it was an unpleasant experience that my mom & I would not want to repeat - It taught my to find my vocal chords...and my mom says that this might be how I learned to sing. Its not like a barking thing - its like a humming kinda thing. I do it now when I am happy - sounds kinda like I am talking! BOL snoopy I have heard since of many dogs that cry a lot on the fetanol. I will be pawraying for your speedy recovery.

My mom got some Acepromazine but she has not had to use it because I have been sleeping through the night since she quit giving me Tramadol....she has been giving me Metacam (which I have taken for my arthritis). I still howl once in awhile in the evening but I stop when my mom takes me outside or cuddles with me. The vet said that I may feel like I need to go outside more often since the surgery and that will get better with time. I had 16 stones in my bladder, that is a lot!!!! I am no longer panting and drooling so my mom thinks that my pain is better now, and my incision is healing. I have 3 incisions. I will get my stitches out next weeksnoopy

Thank Dog for this thread. My dog was put on a 100 mg Fentanyl patch on Tues for unspecified back pain and that is when things started to go downhill. He was anxious, uncomfortable, restless and crying constantly. I really thought he was dying....called the vet and never got a return call (still waiting after over 12 hours). After I read this thread, I freaked and tore the patch off. 2.5 hours later and he is comfortable and relaxed for the first time in days. Thank you.

This is an interesting thread. When I worked at the vet we often discussed contrary reactions to sedation and pain meds in cats as it was common, but I hadn't seen it much in dogs. That being said, it's been a while since I worked there and we didn't have the patches at that time. Hmmmm.

I wonder if the Tramadol gives a dog a headache the same way it gives a lot of people one.

Since you've already been dosed with these medications, another thing to consider is the detoxification of your body. Your body is already trying to do that via the liver and kidneys. To help that healing process along, a single dose of the homeopathic remedy Arnica Montana 30c would be great. Arnica is a great general remedy to have around the house for the entire pack (two and four legged). You don't need a perscription and can probably find it in a health food store or health supplement store or even online. Good stuff!

I just want to thank you all for the great sharing of information regarding your personal experiences with the Fentanyl Patch.

I just got my TTA surgery this past Thursday and have had that patch since. I've had terrible dysphoria. After reading many things on the Internet, my Mom went with her own judgement and removed my patch. I still have pain pills to take, but at least my dysphoria has stopped.

I know it's been months since you've been in here, but I still wanted to thank you!
