Dog's nose turning color?

This forum is for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog.

When we adopted Spencer three years ago (February 2004), his nose was black...later that summer/fall it turned pink.

Just this morning, I noticed it is turning black again! What is going on? Is this normal?

Sometimes a dog's nose will change color. This can be caused by having your dog eat or drink from a plastic dish. There is a reaction with a substance in the plastic which causes color change. Stainless steel bowls for food and water are highly recommended. Other causes of color change are vitaligo (loss of skin pigment) and cold weather. Color usually goes back to normal in warmer climate. This is usually no reason for concern.

Yes, I've heard of this too. And Josie's nose has gone from all black to some pink mixed in. I agree, it is probably normal.

My lovely black White GSD nose has turned pink, too frown I know it can be caused in Winter, called 'snow nose' from lack of Vitamin D me thinks.
And I'd heard of the plastic, too. Kind scary it can do that to pigment!
