Goiter

This forum is for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog.

Hi! Can someone please help me. I need to know if anyone has ever see a dog w/ a goiter on it's neck? My 10 yr old beagle has one. It showed up about 4 years ago and it's not getting any better. It doesn't seem to bother her but it sometimes gets dried out (mainly b/c it's about the size of a big grapefruit) and bleeds a bit. I just have no idea what to do, and I would love some feedback from anyone who knows anything! Please help!! I'm desperate! Thanks so much!

"Goiter" is a human term meaning an enlargement of the thyroid gland. Dogs suffering from thyroid problems get hypothyroid, which is a shrinking, or atrophy, of the thyroid gland.
What your beagle has is a mass on it's throat region. Maybe a fatty lump, maybe an inflammed salivary or lymph gland. A vet visit is needed to find out exactly what it is. If it's oozing and bleeding, then I suggest a vet visit sooner than later.
Good luck.
