GO!
This forum is for dog lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your dog. Don't furget to check out Dogster's Dog Care Guide Book for information about caring for the health of your dog!

My female isn't fixed and I don't intend for her to be bred. How do I deal with her heat(s)?

Thank You Very Much!
I have not known how to respond to Chloe's heat but, now thanx to you I may know how. I have had trouble with her and the bleeding thing, it hasn't stopped, but finally today it did, her hormones I think are coming, she is acting very weird, she used to be all hyper and up to the top of the world, but now all she wants to do is sleep in bed, or sit there on the floor and NOT sleep, I never got that until now. Your the best thank you very much for the info on bitches and their heat problems and how to deal with it!!

Sincerely,
Chloe's Momma

It sickens me to see the backyard breeders that are emerging on this thread to spew mis truths about spaying, neutering, ethics and rescue. eek

This originally started out as a great thread. What a pity.

Today I was asked for some advice from an older teenage girl about her (oops!) pregnant dog. Poor thing.

The mommy pregnant dog is an 8 month old puppy.

(It's a Pittie.)

I tried to be very urgent and uncomfortably direct. I told her about the abortion/spay option, and she balked.

I told her it was basically like getting an 11 year old [human] girl pregnant. I think it sank in.
confused

Think about having to choose to either kill puppies or risk killing your dog because she got (oops!) pregnant at 6 months old. (Which is like getting a girl pregnant at 10 years old.) Oh my Dog. I would not wish anyone to be in the position that teenage girl is in now.

P.S. Since we're all weighing in on which "show" dogs should be bred and should not be bred... I'd like to vote that no dog be bred without champion titles in the dog's working field. And companion dogs be bred only "for personality" (only bred if also displaying strong [non-physical] desired traits).

Forget the AKC's narrow scope and forget "show". So your dog is more physically eccentric than that other, related dog. Can it do the job? Or even survive past age 9? Or function free of crippling malformaties? Gleesh some of these breeds are getting uglier by the litter.

IMHO!
way to go

P.P.S. Real working dogs rule!

Please, all, lets NOT let this thread deteriorate..... it has served as a wealth of excellent information, and it often the thread new dogster members with intact dogs are directed to if they have questions. If the same old tired arguments taint the otherwise effective message of the OP, then this will no longer be a good place to send dog owners.

Before anyone says anything else on this thread, I would re-read the ORIGINAL post and ask yourself if you are going to add any helpful information to the theme of the thread. If not, start a new topic. Simple as that.

This is an important thread in that it kindly and non-judgmentally offers advice and guidance to prevent "ooops" litters. These are a bit rare on dogster so lets preserve its integrity, alright?

Thanks.

Yay Meridian, thank you for starting this thread! If Dogster were to ever implement stickies, this would be one in a heartbeat. way to go

Like Kiona said, non-judgemental education is the most effective because it keeps minds open. snoopy

Even those of us that do breed need to take strict command when our girls are in heat, it is literally a full time job to prevent unwanted matings from occuring. One of my males ripped apart a metal cage that he was in when one of the females was in heat. There is no sure method to keep an intact male from an in heat female. There is also no set way to predict the females exact fertility dates as to when they will let a male mate her. It is all speculative and different for each dog.

My Paris is not fixed and I have really just been afraid to have it done, because it's surgery... but I have to admit, there is a bigger picture to be seen. There are SOOO MANY homeless dogs in this world and that's because there are people not fixing their dogs. The proof is in the many Animal Shelters. It's really sad!

Not only that, but it is a PAIN to deal with the heat cycles. Unlike human women, the dog can't keep herself clean. They can't bathe themselves, nor can they change their own sanitary napkins! Guess who has to do it!? So dog owners, with unaltered females, who don't want to change a dog's bloody pad should get her fixed and if you are truly a dog lover, you'd get your dog fixed simply because you do not want to contribute to any animals suffering.

Special attention to Pit Bull owners: Pit Bulls definitely should be fixed because this poor tortured breed gets the short end of the stick. There are many shelters that will not even try to adopt out a Pit Bull and would rather kill it. So the poor dog just doesn't have a chance. And there are many people who will get a Pittie for the wrong reasons; to fight them, to appear to have a mean/mean looking dog. There are many people who will just leave them outside to "guard the house", and will not properly train and socialize them, which contributes to the bad rep.
