My female isn't fixed and I don't intend for her to be bred. How do I deal with her heat(s)?

Yup yup yup!!! I was totally gonna mention the pyometra thing but by the time I got done with that post I was kinda lost and didn't remember all the things I was gonna mention. Yay for Dogster! Anything else we need to remember to protect those females that go thru a heat, but aren't supposed to be bred?

i would definitely give the "thank you!!" to the person who suggested dog diapers and belly bands- GREAT SUGESSTION! if attatchment can't take place, no pregnancy! sometimes persistent dogs (like me!) will pull off fancy pants or belly bands because they are bored or uncomfortable and the velcro isn't secure enough to keep them on, so i would reccomend the new disposable dog diapers with adhesive, or an alternate way of securing them such as tape (but only over the cloth, not the skin!!)

Diapers can be good for containing "mess" with a female who bleeds a lot, but belly bands and diapers are mere deterrents than anything else, and should be used ONLY as a sort of "tool" to DETER mating, and NOT in ANY way be relied upon as a form of "birth control". Like Pancho mentioned, he likes to pull off those kinds of things, and so do the girls who wear 'em. 'Devices' like these can give you a minute upwards more to deal with dogs who WANT to procreate, but they are not a fool-proof method for preventing pregnancy. This is starting to sound like a public service announcement for middle school aged humans, so I'll stop here, but these are more MYTHS that leads to unwanted pregnancy:

-- If my female is wearing a diaper the male can't access her and impregnate her

AND

-- If the male is wearing a belly band he can't wriggle loose and impregnate the fertile female

Our male and oldest female were supposed to be used as part of my breeders breeding program, so we have all 3 of our shelties intact. I have to tell you, it is such a PITA when Lexi goes into heat. Mila usually follows 5-7 days later, as one female throws the rest into heat. But sometimes I have wondered if I would come home from work to find the basement door had been clawed through, and Duncan had made it upstairs!

Of course my girls wear special home made, snig fitting (not painful snug) panties at all times, other than backyard pee pee time, even when we are paying attention. It just helps with clean up. We will no longer be breeding as Duncan has been having seizures and is now on medication for them, so we will be getting all three fixed in the very near future. The girls are in heat right now, so 1 month after they are done, snip snip! I can't wait! It is so tiring to have them all hormoned up and horny!

But, if you do need panties, the ones I have my mom make, from fleece and flannel, with elastic waist bands and buttons, so they can't be pulled off, are wonderful! They fit nice and snug, small tail hole, and with the elastic and buttons, it would take a lot of work to get them off of her. I am sure it could be done, but it hasn't happned yet! (knock on wood). So, pmail me if you are "in the need".

amen meridian, that's completely right! i didn't mean to say that diapers and belly bands are infallible, just helpful in some situations. and they do have a tendency to "migrate", so one needs to be careful!

Hah! laugh out loud "PITA" -- that's one internet shortcut I hadn't heard, but I figured it out pretty quick! Love it...

Lexi, that's one [good] case of why you might be dealing with a female in heat. It sounds like you're not only informed but prepared to take on the situation of a potentially one-day puppy-having female. Unfortunately it seems like there are enough breeders out there who not only encourage but require breeding females to go to "pet" homes without the people having the knowledge to deal with what is going to happen. If you have taken on a situation like this, TALK TO THE BREEDER!!!!!

I just had a case like this where a woman on the recieving end of a "doodle" mix had been essentially conned into keeping her female dog intact, and she was being told that not only could she not fix the bitch, but that she had to keep her (feed her, etc.) while she was pregnant!!! She had NO CLUE what to do for pregnant mom nutrition wise, nor what kind of vet help she might need. She only knew that when the pups were weaned that they would find "good homes". THIS TYPE OF A THING IS A SCAM, and a scam that hurts the dogs most of all. If you are asked to NOT fix your female pup so that she can be bred, please KNOW YOUR BREEDER and their INTENTIONS.

If your pup is not going to take part in a REPUTABLE breeding program which will involve showing to the level of Champion (or a title in a good working or obedience program) then you need to:

(1) Look at a your contract. If you signed one when you got the pup and it's a NO breeding contract, get your dog fixed when you feel is appropriate and forward the paperwork to your breeder. If you can't comply with the contract, contact your breeder and explain why you have to wait.
(2) If there is no contract, spay your female as soon as she can safely be spayed.
(3) If there is a clause in the contract that dictates your female must remain intact so that she can be a part of your breeder's breeding program, make sure that your breeder gives you enough guidance on caring for her while she's in her first heat to care for her PROPERLY. If the breeder hasn't bothered to take your dog to get her "puppy points" in a conformation dog show, it's a pretty good sign that they don't have good intentions for her. If the breeder is only concerned about getting your female to breed and nothing else, look to get out of the contract ASAP. This kind of "breeder" is not interested in the health of your pup, nor the pups she has. This kind of breeder will take advantage of you and your time and money and emotions. DO NOT let that happen!

I am a breeder and my dogs are not going to be bred for the next year and a half at the least. Lacey had her 1st heat 2 months ago. I am lucky enough to be able to bring her to work with me. At home was a different story. I have 2 intact males and it was driving them to all levels of cunning to try to get at Lacey. I bought human baby diapers and cut a small hole for her tail to come through. We put them on her upside down so that the velcro closures were on the top. This kept the males from even smelling her scent and it kept mating from taking place. Lacey didn't mind the diapers at all, she has one on inthe picture. Lexy is in her 1st heat now and she will shred the diaper off . We use size 4 panties meant for children over the diaper on her and she accepts this fine. It is a solution that works for us and we cage the dogs when we are not home and at night. There is no room for "accidental matings" it is just asking for trouble to not take any and all steps to prevent that from happening.

One more thing about intact animals.... their personality can change. What use to be a very nice, polite. well behaved, sweet. kind.gentle pet... turns into a total opposite. Some can even get nasty and bite etc. Not all will be like that but there are those who do and you never know til it happens. Hormones etc. take over their minds and body. They don't mean to be like that but they don't have the control and don't know how to react differently.

We thought that the doggie diaper was great when Skittles was in heat. We kept her and Bronco apart when we were at work and thought that she was done being in heat( because the vet said that once the yellow stuff, after the blood, was gone she was done.), but kept her diaper on a few days more, just in case. Well, we let Skittles and Bronco play together, in our living room with us sitting RIGHT there. Bronco get past the diaper!!! The diaper was still fully on. Well, we have Taffie out of all that. Now all three are fixed. We didn't wait for Taffie to go through her first heat before she got fixed, like our old vet said to do with Skittles. At first I did feel bad about bringing another pup into this world but we knew Skittles was having just the one pup so we kept her. If she was going to have a bigger litter we had parents that wanted pups.
We have had other Dogsters tell us that we were bad pup parents for what had happened, I tell them that we are not bad parents, just a little uneducated...
Sorry so long.
