Do you know doggy CPR/dangers of rawhide

I got this big square tasty thing the other day. I chewed up and got it nice and gooey until it wasn't hard anymore. It was a soggy mess. Then I took a breath and the thing caught in my throat! I was able to cough it back out but not before my new mom was out of her seat ready to give me the Heimlich Maneuver. She was a nurse for humans and had seen on tv what to do for a dog. Do you know CPR and adbominal thrusts for dogs? Have you ever had to give either of these to an animal? Now she wants to know if what she remembers from the show is the right way to do it.

Whew! Close call! I always heard how much dogs love pig ears but saw on "E-vets" that most vets don't care for 'em much but I didn't really catch why. I never knew how "unsafe" seemingly harmless dog stuff can be! Glad you're okay there pooch! Bella sends wet sloppy get well puppy kisses yer way.

Pet CPR is a class offered by the American Red Cross. If you check your local branch's website they should tell whether they offer it at your location. I know the one here in Louisville, KY does. Although I haven't taken it yet, I plan to as soon as I have a schedule that would allow me to attend the full class!

I don't know how to do the chest compressions, but I know that for the breathing you just hold the snout to keep the mouth closed, and then you put your lips around the nose and blow air into their nose. How exactly that works on smushed face breeds, I'm not really sure.

I took a first aid seminar for pets so I do know how to do the heimlich, CPR and rescue breathing for pets. I've also taken the Red Cross human first aid course so I know how to do it for people also. I really want to take the Red Cross dog first aid seminar (the pet seminar I did was given by a loval veterinarian but not Red Cross) and I'm hoping to do that soon. A shelter here offers it but it fills up months ahead of time...

I've never had to do those on pets (or people) in a real emergency although I did practice (lightly) on my dogs so I would know the correct positioning if there was an emergency.

I did once have to pull a rawhide out of Ginger's throat, though. That was when I decided NO MORE rawhides in our house! Ginger has always been very good about chewing small pieces of her chew bones but this one time she chewed off a larger piece and she was licking it and because they get so sticky when they're chewed, it stuck to her tongue/mouth and so she tried to swallow it to get it off. It got caught at the back of her mouth/entrance to her throat and she started hacking. I rushed over to her, opened her mouth and pulled it out! It was difficult because it was so slimy but I managed to pull it out of there...

Well, I'm a nurse and know how to do it on people. I am going to find out where I can take a pet CPR seminar. I would really like to do that. My experience with people CPR will probably help. Thanks.
